To back up the "surprisingly efficient way to get a speed-up" thing: I once wrote a toy compiler, without an optimizer and without even a register allocator (so all variables lived in stack memory). In my test benchmarks it was ro

A non-optimizing compiler is a real compiler.

That's another technical workaround. A good one, when possible, but it doesn't exactly fix fascism.

I'm not in the US, but say I was. I'm fully on board that the country is slowly (or not so slowly) drifting into becoming a fascist state. Say I needed to leave the country for some important reason and come back. Say I didn'

Depends on a lot of context. You may notice issues with some GPU drivers if you have hardware with new drivers, because older GPU drivers contain X-specific workarounds which new drivers may lack (I know this is an issue with the Apple M1 G

I never found GitHub's systems for issue tracking to be all that great. Cross-repository issues and development plans are hard to track within a git host. I've always used an external panning and issue tracking tool, mostly Linear

If you're a big company, you can afford having one engineer spend one or two days per year to maintain your self-hosted GitLab or Forgejo. On top of better reliability than GitHub, you'll get the additional bonus that your source

Merging a PR by drive-by contributors is far from trivial. As the maintainer, you become responsible for the other person's code for all eternity; it's on you to read it, understand it, update it when stuff around it changes, an

Oh this makes sense! Obviously, it can't be illegal for a non-forum-member to add HDMI support; it's just an HDMI forum policy after all, not law. That's certainly the link I was missing for this to make sense.

Does anyone understand how HDMI 2.1 support is now no problem? I remember that 2.1 support in AMD's open source driver was blocked by the HDMI forum, but I haven't heard any news about them unblocking it. What changed?

There should be a space between "in the standard library" and "in a library written by some random person with a github account". An sqlite driver does not need to be bundled by the runtime, but it would be pretty great

I mean it's not really different terminology, matrices are order 2 tensors so we're all in agreement that they're technically doing math on tensors. It's just weird to call it tensors when you exclusively operate on matr

As it seems to be getting worse over time (with 4.8 being worse than 4.6 and 5 worse than 4.8 again), could this simply be signs of model collapse? I mean more and more training data you find on the web is generated by previous models. The

Do you have numbers to back that statement up? I don't necessarily doubt it, but I haven't seen anything to support it. Note that raw user numbers won't really cut it; if 1 million people left Twitter, it's possible that

It shows massive withdrawals mainly in 2022 after lighter withdrawals in 2021, before a period of refilling; and then even more rapid withdrawals in 2026. I believe 2021 and some of 2022 was a response to inflation from COVID, and 2022 was

Yes, it's one of the options there. But I'm not doing that, I'm just pressing the A key and it automatically gets transformed to Å once I hit space around 50% of the time.

It would've helped a ton but it's not like electricity generation is the only source of emissions. You can't run a car or a plane on nuclear power. You can technically run a cargo ship on nuclear power but that's also

Å microcontroller needs a microcontroller core. EDIT: Leaving that Å in. For some reason, iOS on iPad is obsessed with autocorrecting "A" to "Å" even when using the English keyboard. It's driving me nuts.

Yes, any function call can fail due to resource (i.e stack space) exhaustion. Other things, like integer addition or a while loop, can not. This is semantically relevant.
