Pleasantly surprised this post was about a neat little tool and not another migration manager. This always seemed like a weak spot in regular SQL. Wish it were declarative like Spanner DDL. When using Postgres, I just try to keep my schema

Oh and even a non-ML server rack uses more power than a networking rack

And 1 ML rack uses the power of like 10 regular racks

This looks like it depends on the outside air to cool the coolant. "Radiative" can mean that too, not just IR radiation.

Is there not a FOSS solution like this already that they could just deploy?

You can't do any linked list operations on this other than "get next" which is still kinda different

Key transparency is a public list of keys, like what CAs do. That still trusts an authority. Of course a third party could archive/republish the key list and you could trust them instead of Whatsapp, but that's what I call an out

That's the thing, there is no indexing model. Every string operation is an O(N) seek. But even if you don't care about performance, it's just cumbersome. Looking at the SO questions for simple things like finding the position

I mean emojis specifically. Python or JS strings are designed for unicode chars. Swift made it about grapheme clusters, which are possibly a valid edge case for like Arabic emphasis marks but not something they'd be motivated to center

They can also tell your client it has the correct key. Yours and the other clients are all talking to their mitm in this scenario. There's fundamentally no way to solve this without users verifying keys out-of-band.

I used Swift in versions 1-4, so idk if it's better now, but the syntax seemed fancy and complicated for no reason. So many different ways to do simple things like loops. Infuriating strings lib. Kinda believe the entire language was d

Even if your client is asking other clients to verify, what if everyone has the same wrong key for a particular user Whatsapp has chosen to spoof?

They also decide what public key is associated with a phone number, right? Unless you verify in person.

iPhone backups can be local at least. But the one time I used iCloud, I had to sacrifice a device just to load from backup.

Well they also had the whole backup vs no backup debate. Eventually they added backup to Google account, but it was confusing at times whether or not you actually had a backup.

There's free choice for those OSes to use different kernels, but they don't, they all use the same Linux (rather than say BSD). There's a lot of advantage in getting aligned on things, even though anyone can choose not to.

Shouldn't need to install third party stuff for such a basic feature. One more thing that will possibly break with updates or not play nice with something.

Most of the stuff isn't really personal preference, more like being temporarily used to a different way. Btw search "modifier keys" in Mac sysprefs if you want to rebind command to control. I'm also sick of using separat

My spare PC runs Win10. Was able to install it without internet and thus get an offline account. Since they stopped full updates for it, it's a lot less annoying. Almost all the nags were at reboot time, usually triggered by the update

The whole btree vs hash discussion is interesting. Many people assume "ID" columns should be hash, but iirc the default btree works best for those. Also treelike structures are fundamentally better for nearly-sequential value inse

I've had to get in touch with a human before for account recovery, it worked. Horror stories, idk. I hear horror stories about every single business I interact with, but then don't experience it myself.

Google Authenticator used to be disconnected from reality like this. Users were asking how to copy the codes to another phone, and they said "you can't, WAI, should add the other phone as a second auth method on every site."

Google has a pretty robust recovery process. Of course if you've given them absolutely nothing about them then forgotten your password, it's tough.
