"There is billions of spending on projects they don't need" On the list of governemnt expenses... NASA is almost a rounding error ($18.4 billion in 2011, about 0.5% of the $3.4 trillion US budget). Perspective is important.

Shouldn't surprise anyone, no, but "250 people would find themselves with no job, no severance, and health insurance that would be gone by month’s end — just nine days." That's appalling, and that's the real issue b

I love this, I've used it for years any time I need to rank things, since having to pick my preference between different options is much more accurate than giving them arbitrary numbers.

The problem is not that Valve is exercising the right not to do business with them, but that they're taking away everything they ever bought from them. It's akin to me wronging Amazon and they come to my house and pick up everythi

I completely agree with you there, and I'm sorry if my comment came across as aggressive. What I'm surprised by though, is that anyone thinks corporations are anything but a way to make money. Does anyone really believe they care

The article is about Google pulling down Russian ads, paid for by Russians. It is clear that Google is doing business with people in Russia. This isn't about visitors to a website, which I agree is an entirely different situation.

I would choose not to do business with Nazi Germany. If I'm running a business and don't agree with their laws, I can choose not to do business there. If I'm choosing to do business there, I'm choosing to respect their l

You're advocating for breaking a country's laws. What makes Russia's laws worth less than any other country's? Whether you agree or not with them, you have to respect them. They are a sovereign country and have the right

Then that really does raise some questions as to what 100 million lines are for. What operations exactly does an airplane need to execute that require that much code?

The thing is, do they just count all the lines of code in all the libraries they use, as well as the OS (all of it compiled from source, I would guess)? I imagine they do, since that's the only reasonable way that 100 million lines of

This is incredible and makes me think a website like this could and should exist, containing an interface to as many unix tools as possible. Yes, one could "RTFM" as one commenter mentioned, but if you're just a casual CLI us

What makes Hacker News social media? It's just a forum, essentially, like the forums of old. There are threads, and people can reply to them. There are no friendships or any kind of social graph associated with it, which is what makes

“If they don’t learn they will go out of business” sounds nice, but in reality, we can all point to hundreds and hundreds of different companies that show that that simply does not happen. Otherwise, the US would have the best and friendlie
