What I will never understand is how harmless old Netflix found its way into an acronym for the big beasts of tech. Not even Microsoft gets that privilege (for some reason).

Because network effects. Even if you clone Reddit you still need to convince people to come use your clone, that’s where the actual hard work is. And “ton of demand”, there isn’t really. Just some loud critics, but nowhere near a big enough

You are right about the trade-off: A more infectious, less deadly virus is the natural evolutionary path for them. But about the breeding ground, not really: If one day some super deadly variant evolves, it's not popping up in all of t

Interestingly, the M1 Max is only a 10 core (of which only 8 are high performance). I wonder what it will look like when it’s a 20-core, or even a 64-core like the Threadripper. Imagine a 64-core M1 on an iMac or Mac Pro. We’re in for some

You might be surprised to find that that is not the case in Europe. In fact, apart from China and English-influenced countries, very few countries around the world use dots for decimal points: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki&#

Off-topic, but if you do https://youtu.be/k7f-51oy0OA?t=26m50s instead of typing the time separately, it'll load the video straight at the right time. Edit: Loved watching it by the way, thank you for the link!

I can't tell, but it'd never be allowed. Grab an AAA game, fix a bug in it, and now you're free to redistribute the game without consequences. That'd be insane.

This sounds like the kind of thing that could bring RSS back to life. I'm cautiously optimistic, but it seems like it turns RSS into something every normal Chrome user will have contact with, and that's promising.

Firefox runs on systems with 512MB RAM. [1] Can you imagine keeping a Slack tab open on a system like that? Never mind 100 tabs. [1] https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/93.0/system-requiremen...

That -sounds- simple, but it isn't, and in reality any company would easily bypass that by simply creating other companies to take some of the revenue. They already do that to avoid international taxes. As an example, the US charges ta

I think it’s because with Docker on macOS you’re actually running a Linux VM where it then runs Docker, so it can be a bit of a drain on some laptops.

It really is wild. ISPs have been overselling "unlimited" connections for forever, and being paid for it, but when their customers actually want to use literally the service they paid for, _legally_, it's somehow wrong? I gue

This is the part I dislike about these super permissive licenses. Attribution is required, but a couple lines in some random file do you a fat lot of good if someone forks your project, rebrands, and essentially builds on top of your hard w

In the UK at least, there is a separate minimum wage for people under different ages. Teens have a much much lower minimum wage precisely because of what you just said.

Even if your next job requires you to move somewhere else, you’ll still have had 12-24 months (or however long) of cheap living, and you get to save all that money. For me at least, between rent, bills, and not having access to the same exp

Oh the house prices. I’ve gone from looking at £250+K houses and thinking I’ll never be able to afford one on my own to “I’m buying a house in the next 12 months”. £5K deposit (not even joking), a 3 year mortgage (which will end up costing

I did exactly that this year - went from £1050/mo for a 2-bedroom flat in the south to £375/mo for a 2-bedroom house with a back yard, in the North East. You can get anything you need delivered these days, including groceries, and

Your outrage might be aimed at the wrong people. Consider the law. They’re following it, and you’re saying “we should punish them for following the law”. That’s never going to happen. Ask yourself why the law allows stuff like that to happe
