How is this better than an electric motor turning a fan? Modern high-bypass jet engines get the vast majority of their thrust from turning a fan. The turbine part is (mostly) just used to generate torque to drive the fan. Modern electric mo

This. The vast majority of line managers are very, very far removed from actual costs (and often, actual driving reasons too!). Talk to an actual office space fit-out specialist to get real numbers. They'll tell you that individual off

That argument just suggests that the US has more scam operations, not that it has all of them. Crowding out is still an effect, so scam operations are incentivized to target other countries as the US becomes fully 'supplied' with

The energy cost of desalination is a function of the salt concentration (saltier water => more power per liter of fresh water). So when doing commercial desalination you don't want to produce very high salinity output (because it me

Minor nit from paper: The range for Moments is listed as bounded due to overflow risk using floats. This may be true for the provided implementation, but it's not inherent to the algorithm. The calcuation of the higher order moments wo

It seems rather weird to use an explicit cache for the dynamic programming exponentiation. When computing x^n, n is either even or odd. If it's even, then the result is (x^(n/2))^2, else it's odd and the result is x * (x^(n&#

This is a very common reaction that shows a lack of experience in dealing with scale IT systems. You're correct that a simple DB with some forms would be cheap. But integration tends to be crazy expense. For this sort of system, other

In fairness, this is a horrifically complex subject. Pretty much every point you mention is a rabbit hole that you can spend ages exploring. e.g. the metal stack: One would like to connect transistors together. Copper is lower resistance th
