> Maybe that belief that I am conscious is flawed and merely an illusion That's the Dennett nonsense. Of course our sense inputs are an illusion, it's that there is anything being perceived at all that is the mystery! : DENNETT

> various physical and chemical elements can form ever more complex pattern-recognizing feedback loops You're not being reductionist enough. The brain is just atoms. 'Feedback loops' is just a model, and not actually real.

It's conflating conscious awareness with the existence or non-existence of free will. It's conscious awareness that is the ineffable mystery, unless you believe the chair you're sitting on actually feels you sitting on it. I

Heard of the China brain thought experiment? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_brain Would such a brain be conscious? Why or why not?

Both the brain and a chair are made of the same fundamental particles, following the same physics. Yet, no one believes the chair experiences anything. The core problem of the materialist frame is why the atoms that make up the brain are ab

I'm not sure I understand the people claiming you should use server side session tokens instead. How am I supposed to make that work with Angular? I have to be able to send to the client the user privileges somehow.

Nice! You're pretty smart. But you think me being a jerk is somehow relevant to anything? Hmm. A-.

It does not matter that I am a jerk. I guess Dyatlov would have thought Akimov was a jerk if Akimov had just beat him up instead of following his orders. And Akimov would have taken the morally correct decision if he had beaten him up.

Even discounting the feedback loops, an energy transition only in the developed world would do very little.

Suppose the US oil industry had not engaged in science denial then. Does this somehow mean that the rest of the world's emissions would now be at the level they need to be?

Yeah, and still the fact is that if US GHG emissions drop to 0, it won't do much for global warming. It was good that Biden brought up in last night's debate that the US produces 15% of global GHG emissions. Which is disproportion

@krapp I just don't fear violent rhetoric. It's not something that merits a reaction, in my view. Basically, if an author can say it in a book, then random citizens ought to be able to say it on the internet.

More fundamentally, it's a problem with secular society. Really, if the only goal of life is achieving material prosperity, and you're not achieving it, there's no particular reason not to kill yourself, other than holding on
