I mean, exactly, that’s why this is a bad idea. Adding a column is simple, having your DB be your API is madness. The more magic you add, the worse it gets.

The way I see it, Twitter was one of the last sites standing in the content curation game. Reddit’s great, but balkanised. HN itself is pretty good and broader but Twitter was the best product I used for kicking up stuff from around the web

I have, in fact, read the article, and they are _vastly underestimating_ the importance of those downsides. For instance, I once dealt with an issue that involved adding a column to a table, which they think shouldn't be too bad, that

I have spent my entire, long, career, fighting against someone who thought this was a good idea, unpicking systems where they implemented it or bypassing systems where this was implemented. It's a many-headed hydra that keeps recurring

I’d claim this highlights just quite how established quantum supremacy is. Specifically, they just did the work using quantum computers because they were the best tool for the job. We’ve moved on from the question of “are they good for anyt

I have no information on this case. My impression, however, is that things like this happen all the time, they just rarely get to court. I know people who’ve experienced pregnancy discrimination, but the kinds of firm I work for have enough

It’s interesting to note that by this point “Quantum Supremacy” is well and truly established and is being used for something that’s actually useful. What we still lack, however, is any demonstrated supremacy outside the realm of “model qua

Yeah, but it’s horses for courses. The C version can be deployed in far more places and can be far faster than the Go equivalent. Which is “better” is a contextual judgement call. There’s plenty of weird architectures out there that run C a

I mean, yes, go has proper flag parsing as part of the standard library and C doesn’t. Yes that’s going to make a line count difference but it’s also why code golf arguments are pointless.

Not massively. I mean, an array is a data structure and looping through it is an algorithm, but that’s a bit basic even for a 101 DSA course.

Yeah, the self-assessment website isn’t exactly slick, but it’s easy to use, fills in most of the fields for you and gets the results correct. It’s not like I’m not aware of bad software by government but the taxes ain’t it. Possibly becaus

I love it when someone says they’re going to cut costs by “Encouraging Innovation”. Almost as much as “Reducing Fraud”. Political types love these announcements they’re going to get something for nothing.

The difficulty you are experiencing here is that this is so effective people don’t even get started. There used to be non-Apple devices that could sync with iTunes. Apple sued them into the ground.

I think hard sciences are amenable to more precision, but it’s fine to be imprecise as long as you’re cognisant of the level of precision you’re using. The problem with the studies being criticised is their conclusions aren’t supported by t

Yeah, I don’t, sadly. All I have is a bunch of memories from 40 years ago from when someone drew out a family tree and I’ve no particular inclination to put in the hard yards to reconstruct it far back.

Yeah, anything you assert has to be proved at runtime. Liquid Haskell just a) checks your assertions are consistent with the type returned and b) avoids you having to check again. You could theoretically remove all the unnecessary checks by

But Reader _wasn't_ easily replaced by local software. They centralised social usage of RSS, then killed it. Yes, you can still run an RSS reader, but RSS and blogs as a a model of social networking? Never came back.

You need to decide if these are private companies or public utilities. If they’re public utilities, the government should provide them. Restricting company’s freedom to choose a business model is not the answer. You might not like it, but t
