Do most people (non-programmers/sysadmins) use the tab key when writing text? I'm used to the tab key moving the focus to the next field. It would annoy me if on one website it didn't, I'm sure.

You have to trust the PC at the internet cafe in Elbonia. That's the machine that runs the ssh client, and that's the machine you physically type your one-time-password into... or disclose your private key to.

1W = 1J/s, so might it be more accurate to say that deleting 41 exabytes costs at least 1 Joule? (TIL 1 exabyte = 2^30 gigabytes, but I expect I'll forget again.)

It doesn't add anything. Imagine your comment was at the top. The linked article doesn't say how to get the effect. Your comment doesn't say how to get the effect. So it would all be a bit mystifying. Imagine your comment was in the middle

People interpret it as whining, and feel whining is deserving of downvotes. It's not a community norm I agree with --- I feel that if you want to know what you've done wrong and you're not acting all entitled about it (oh, but some people

Because it's not enough that you can't give the user the page they asked for, you have to disturb the quiet in the office without warning as well. (Please, add to the title that there's sound.)

How much do passports cost? What proportion of North Americans don't have passports? What proportion of people signing up to social networks have bad intentions? What proportion require pseudonymity and have good intentions?

I half agree. The N.Y.Times should be more about helping its readers decide who should be the next President than telling them who will be the next President. But they'd be falling down on the job if they weren't making it clear that, say,

You're working on a startup, so you should be valuing your time at about $1000/hour (said something posted here on HN a while back).

You can still use :visited to change the link color, that's still supported, and it's the most common way a visited link is styled differently from an unvisited link. This way nothing gets positioned differently because a link has been visi

This is a terribly misleading headline (as is the article headline). > the limits in moving data out of Amazon have much to do with the ability of Azure and Rackspace to accept incoming data.

More than that: the airlines charge what they think people will pay. There's no reason to suppose that heavier people are willing to pay more than lighter people are (beyond children being light and poor).

Goldman's market value declined by $2.2bn in one day. To a first approximation, this tells us nothing about how much it has cost Goldman Sachs. Are customers walking away, whether to competitors or out of the market entirely? Who knows?
