You'll be glad to know I explain the differences in the Syntax in function chapter of the book. http://learnyousomeerlang.com/syntax-in-functions#guards-gua... Scroll down to the 'note' to see it. I don't explain 'and' vs 'andalso' though

Hey, I hope you guys enjoy these chapters as much as you enjoyed the first ones (the reviews were pretty good!) I'm still accepting criticism and fixes if you see any mistake or whatever. Have a nice read :)

If you go back to http://learnyousomeerlang.com/starting-out-for-real : In the Erlang shell, expressions have to be terminated with a period followed by whitespace (line break, a space etc.) Maybe I should try to make it even more apparen

"Well I sit in front of a computer all day, getting mad at random text on a screen. Sometimes I add my own text that will madden a different guy in a few months/years." People seem to like that description.

It depends on the problem. If it's something algorithmic that fits into a given data structure, I go through a bunch of mental visual representations; graphs, trees, etc. If the model fits, I usually imagine the code in the language I used

Please re-read his question: "how many chars we have?" "how many elements we have?" ch[1] = 0; ch[2] = 1; ch[3] = 2; ... ch[10] = 9; This is about having the Nth element of the array with the index N rather than N-1.

Erlang is dynamic strong typed. It IS type safe. It's just not statically typed. You can get static types for the safety through dialyzer, which does success type inference on source code or existing code (as long as it was compiled with d

The Syntax is the first hard step to go over for many people. Erlang is hardly what you'd call an easy to read language, except if you've used functional languages before. The recursion and pattern matching are relatively uncommon (and diff

I might eventually relax the license. I'm a permissive guy and don't mind people sending links, copying or printing stuff, but I'd like to be notified about distribution (I would mainly allow non-commercial stuff, educational and archival p

I know Miran from IRC, so it was a very friendly discussion. I certainly aim to make it as good as LYAH, his online book is doing a great service to the Haskell community and I'd like Erlang to have something similar.

Hello HN, I'm the guy who wrote the LYSE site! I Hope you'll enjoy it :) At least I have fun writing and drawing for it. I'll always be fixing mistakes and technical points that were not caught in the reviewing process, so it's much appreci

With Erlang, a similar effect could be achieved with the process dictionary: > erlang:put(1,1). undefined > erlang:get(1). 1 > erlang:put(1,erlang:get(1)+1). 1 > erlang:get(1). 2 > erlang:put(2,3).

Apparently both in strings and binaries. Great programming-related news if any.
