The main part of the Cray was a compute offload engine that asynchronously executed job lists submitted by front end general purpose computers that ran OSes like Unix. It was actually pretty close to the model of a GPU.

There was apparently earlier Pentium 4s that supported some version of a 64bit isa, support for which was fused off before sending to customers in order to convince people to move to Itanium. https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-

Like a lot of things, the taxonomy kind of breaks down at the edges and arguments can be made either way. I will throw out there though that ALU width and buses are generally seen as orthogonal to 'bitness' of a processor, and mor

I mean, you're looking at almost a month out or so given the extra stress of the end of the semester with finals and projects. And the semester is only five months or so to being with. It's not really realistic to make this a mor

My understanding was that the main benefit of quaternions in computer graphics was representing rotations in a way that doesn't result in gimble lock. And beyond that, for those rotations, a quaternion doesn't scale nearly as well

This is not achievable. There isn't enough rewritable microcode to do this even as a super slow hack. And even if all of the microcode were rewritable, ucode is kind of a fallback pathway on modern x86 cores with the fast path being ha

I don't even know if eventually we'll hit an equilibrium. The end of Moore's law pretty much dictates specialization, it's just more apparent in fields without as much ossification first.
