This is the first I've ever suggested an opinion on it publicly, and I'm a line engineer, not management. Internally, I don't usually talk about things like this, either.

Googler here, these articles are literally the first I've heard of it. No internal emails, rabblerousing, or any kind of comms about it, and it seems as though the union discussed doesn't actually exist yet. Seems a bit odd (and b

I'm curious to see what they ultimately mean by "biological contamination". The objectives are so overly broad that they might be twisted enough to cut off colonization efforts.

Linux kernel source is a good start. Read up on just about everything in thr kernel docs on I2C, SPI, and regsets. Read datasheets, play around with dev boards. There's no manul for it, really -- its close to old school software engine

This is reductivist to the point of insanity. Google is a large company, and this news makes me ashamed of the behaviors of thr execs at the helm, ceetainly, but not everyone inside of Google are evil, or passively in line with these guys.

That's what I did so much in my early days at Google, banking a week's worth of time and making a huge push. I don't do that too much anymore, though.

Because its a total waste of money -- I'd be hiring someone who does not posess the requisite skills to do the base level job. My job is to create software solutions for the company by using my skills, and lead a team of engineers to p

I haven't followed her career, TBH, but at the time she made the statement, she was working for Yahoo, so where she's at currently is irrelevant. Just because she's highly visible, doesn't mean her views are correct.

Some students see it as one more thing distracting them from writing more code, and believe the only thing that will determine their career success is ability to write code (as you all know, ability to write code is necessary but

There's been multiple calls that the policy is dead or 120%, neither are accurate, most spoken by folks with ulterior motives and biases.

Yes, because context is key. In that statement she was attempting to craft Yahoo!'s work culture as it's CEO. In contrast, I've been at Google since 2006 and have been utilizing 20% time since I started, and other Googlers he

It depends on the need/success of the project. My first 20% project was a disconnected caching filesystem back in 2005 and it was rapidly shifted to my 80% project as it solved a real need in our infrastructure.

At the time she made this statement, she represented Yahoo, not Google, and was making major changes in its culture to fit her direction. I wouldn't put much stock into these statements. As a current Googler, I've been spending 20

Ah, no. Current Googler here: 120% is a misunderstanding of what 20% time is.

Marissa doesn't exactly represent Google's culture, given she works at Yahoo... :P

120% is a misconception. 20% is volunteer. 80% is assigned. I built MDT that way, taking a few days cumulatively to work on it, and I maintain a strict 40 hour work week, with my manager's backing.

Current Googler -- AFAIK, 20% time is still a thing. You just have to clarify the project with your manager, just like you did before. I utilized it to write the Mendel development tool (mdt) for Coral boards here: https://pypi.o

I beg to differ, given the propensity of FPGA tools and the Google opensilicon job thing where yoi can tape out a corner of a chip for free.

I typically do, too, but the Pi4 compute module and board are all too eerily similar to a product my team demoed to Eben at CES... right down to the MCO for the port layouts, form factor, and the high-density module interconnects.

Depends on the 40-pin peripheral layout. The tinkerboard doesnt run Raspbian, but instead runs ASUS' own OS.

Any of the Udoo boards, most specifically the x86 Advanced Plus II. Plenty of GPIOs from the Braswell core, and another chunk from an integrated Arduino. Its a bit more than 2x the price, but the flexibility and standard boot and peripheral

Ostensibly, yes. But consider that Eben Upton is an ex-Broadcom guy that helped build videocore and that they get everything at cost, and it looks like an incredibly powerful PR move for Broadcom with side benefits.

It's not dangerous -- it's a mistake. It's like putting strawberries in with salmon on a salad: ostensibly it's good, but it's wrong. :D C and C++ are really different languages these days. They share some syntax, b
