If typesetting is performance critical, what would count as a non-performance critical program?

Whats your criteria/cutoff for what should be in a standard library?

This isnt quite true, the borrow checker forces us to use things like RefCell, or Vec with (generational) indices, which all have run-time overhead. (this isnt even counting those who use Rc)

Anything I can read up on why fragmentation is so expensive? My naive brain keeps saying "why not use a hash map of lists, by size" but I know I'm missing something.

Rust is great, but it can't do very basic things that OOP offer. You can't make a simple observer in Rust without RC<RefCell<T>>, unsafe, global-ish mutable state, or being forced into some framework.

And it has a difficult learning curve to learn how to use it without unsafe =)

Not from what I've seen, and idiomatic Rust (to my frustration) advises against traits in favor of enums, probably because they dont do well in Rust. Also, I didnt claim abstraction == OO, but Rust struggles with both. Luckily, Rust sh

Rust fits well in low-level cases and data-oriented design situations. For things needing any abstraction or modern OO, the borrow checker really damages your architecture.

I'm experienced in both, and IME Rust isnt that much better than C++. It's generally more fun than C++ and a bit safer, but all in all it's not 5x better, not even 2x... I'd place it around 1.1x perhaps. Each had a diffi

As much as I enjoy Rust, I have to agree with GP. Rust team needed to add a lot of complexity to the language to allow us to solve the borrow checker puzzles, such as Pin, Cell/RefCell, split_at_mut, the list goes on, and keeps growing

Cant MS just provide a button somewhere that downloads and installs the browser? A computer doesn't need a browser to download something from the internet (such as a browser).

From what I've heard, the borrow checker is much more suited to low-level programs like embedded programs, and for other kinds of programs, the borrow checker is in the way a lot more. That could be why you don't understand the co

Ive always wondered something: comparing to languages like Swift, is Rust really better if it takes so much cognitive overhead and architectural backflips to work around the borrow checker's limitations? Couldnt we be spending that tim
