I think it was inevitable that Automattic would more closely integrate the two products, but they're doing it in a way that maintains both brands. As far as having to choose a permanent identifier on signup, it's not the path I would have c

Once Automattic took over and scaled Gravatar out with their amazing CDN, adoption really ramped up. I use them without pause on my own projects, and I'm really happy to not have to configure my avatar every place I go!

I've found that it's best to find some sort of sweet spot. Not so simple that later scaling requires a huge rewrite, but not so complex that you're spending valuable time up front to scale something that may never need it. I now try to code

I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Were you at Active? I'll write a post later on about how I ended up moving to SF. Good call on the move, this area is amazing.

I do this all the time on the GitHub repo itself. I'll have an idea for a small tangential feature (like per-repo pageview stats) that I want to spend an hour hacking on to see if it goes anywhere. By branching off master, I can experiment

I considered Disqus, and will continue to evaluate it, but for now I'm going old-skool and leaving comments off my blog. I'd like to experiment with using HN for comments. Hmm, I wonder if I could hook up a piece of JS that automatically pu

Isn't that what comments here at HN are for? =) In all seriousness, from past adventures in blogging, I'm sick of managing a commenting system of my own. I love HN and the people here, so this is the only place I plan to notify when I post.

This interview was from before I left Powerset to work on GitHub full time, but is still quite relevant. Let me know if you have any questions!

The difference is that if Apple were to do something like this they'd actually ship product and not just release a far-fetched concept.

No more disturbing than Google really. Today's reality is that if you put information on the internet that can be tied to your name, email, address, phone number, etc, then that information can be found and used for or against you. Improvem

Of particular interest to some of the hackers here will be the "Impact Graph." This was my first Canvas + JavaScript graph implementation and I must say that it's a pretty nice system to work with. While Canvas is strictly a painting tool,

Here's a piece of it that we did opensource. An Erlang pipe implementation. It acts as a FIFO for binaries. http://github.com/mojombo/erlang_pipe/tree/master/pipe.erl The performance ends up being quite good.

Changes to the git protocol happen at a glacial pace. Keeping up with them will not be a problem. The only users of the C daemon that would benefit from egitd are our competitors. We've open sourced our Ruby git library since that has benef

It's not about that at all. I'm more familiar with Erlang than C, and the git source is a twisty jungle of advanced C code. I could have patched git-daemon, but to have a project that I can easily understand, maintain, and improve, I chose

No, Fuzed does nothing to help with database scaling. If you're going to scale big you'll need to deal with that separately. We hope that Fuzed will free up your time to deal with those interesting DB scaling issues!
