Greasemonkey Script Authors have been threatened before and they will continue to be threatened until one of them actually takes the threats to court (and wins). In the beginning of userscripts.org, I hosted the domain in Germany, which ope

There is the Levitation Project which attempts to port Mediawiki to a Git backend. It was spawned out of pretty much this very same discussion in the German Wikipedia. http://levit.at/ion/wiki/Main_Page

If you're using a serializer to write your document, it doesn't make any difference whether you serialize to XML or HTML. If you worry about where to put a '/', you should most likely be using a serializer instead of whatever you are doing.

It's not unprecedented at all. People know people. You just call up some mid-level or senior PayPal rep, if you know one - and I know plenty of people who do. If there's a media shitstorm brewing, PayPal will also be responsive - it's busin

This is only tangentially related to the original post, but the name eBay is not a case of e-prefixing, it's a shortening of "echo bay", because echobay.com was already taken.

Also, with newer phones, including the Nokia E72, E75, and the Motorola Milestone, there is absolutely no problem when switching over. Data connections don't drop a bit, voice isn't lagging or anything. I wonder if these people actually exp

You are right, of course, and I should have said "The singular of anecdotes isn't data, either" - the nexus reports obviously have a bunch of anecdotal "evidence" behind them :)

I was tempted to comment 'this isn't news to any of us', but it is a good summary of what Markdown does and what dialects there are. Unfortunately, it doesn't mention that Gruber basically abandoned Markdown and let it linger for months on

It's a curious flash of light. Next question? (I suppose it's probably man-made or a case of St. Elmo's Fire, but the images and video are very bad quality.)

Slightly off-topic, but I find it confusing to display only the second-level domain for links in cases like this. "google.com" makes me expect something different than "sites.google.com". On a more related note, I enjoyed the yacoset site w

The JS code was obviously unpacked/prettified. All internal vars have shortnames like B, C, D, etc. Everything that interacts with the outside has long names, as in the minified plurk code. Astonishing.

If you want universal uniqueness, 128 bit won't last you too long. The number of atoms in the universe is estimated to be around 10^80, so you'd need about 266 bits to address every single atom. Give it some headroom, go to 512 bits...

Of course it's possible. The question is, is it likely? Consider the sheer volume of search queries that hit Google. I find it unlikely that they could manually filter them, and I also find it unlikely that one could programmatically find t

Why do they even bother specifying Courier, instead of going straight to 'monospace'? At least that way, the user-defined monospace will be used, which might in the worst case still be Courier, but is more likely to be something sensible. (

Honestly, I don't get what makes those minimal. Tumblelogs could be called minimal, or the original Google search page. If those are minimal, you can argue that all websites have only the necessary things on them and are thus minimal. I'm s

I can agree that teaching people how to code well is more important than teaching people the grammar of a computer language. Then again, that fact is supposedly pretty obvious, and yet the existing approaches to teaching programming or deve
