it will not replace jobs that need to happen in person. I think we'll soon see robots take many of those jobs. And yes, I'm frequently ridiculed for that opinion. But I really think it will happen during my (late) lifetime.

But node multiplies that, a lot. Yes. Rails is measured in hundreds per second. Node in thousands per second. The point that you still seem to be missing is that the monetary amounts involved have normally turned into a rounding error lon

This is a way of making programs run faster, and not a little faster, but a hundred times faster. Sorry, but if anything then that statement is absurd. Faster than what? And where's that "hundred times faster" figure coming from? It seem

And now the cost of hosting a hundred webapps is just a rounding error in contrast to the cost of developing one. That's a weird way to look at it, unless you're in the webapp hosting business? For everyone else there is usually only one

Excuse me, but that's what you call elegant? From a readability standpoint I'll take the "old" version any day: function getFromDB(foo) { var result = asynchronousCache.get("id:3244"); if ( null == result ) { resul

Count me in. There's a die-hard core of callback proponents (especially in twisted- and lately in node-land) who claim the pure callback-style is more predictable, robust and testable. This is not my experience. I've been through that with

but the cost of hosting a web app just dropped 99%. The cost of hosting a webapp tends to be a rounding error in contrast to the cost of developing the webapp.

Why would kissmetrics want to provide a way for their customers to link users by the means of that cookie id? To me this seems like an oversight rather than malicious intent.

Their chat-interface isn't better either. Honestly, would you send a mibbit link in a professional context to an non-nerd contact? Well, that was a rhetoric question... The colors are terrible, the whole thing looks like a relic from the 90

It seems you missed the part where he said "teach people how to use IRC (yeah right)". The frontpage of mibbit is an instant "close-tab" to a non-nerd user.

Realistically, you'd really have to try hard to do $50k+ damage I think tipping over a candle should do that nicely. Not much effort needed.

Oh great, a responsive CSS framework... Could elaborate on why you created yet another one instead of going with MQ, Less, AnonAnon, Cabin, Gravity, 1140grid, Sass/Susy, Inuit or Skeleton?

No, the suggestion is: Having all logs in one place is a good thing. Even if it's so unstructured that only a human can digest it. Context matters, a lot. When my app logs a timeout against redis then my next question is "so what did redis

But if you control it, why bother with syslog? I'd ask this backwards: Why bother with a homegrown solution when syslog exists and gets the job done? A home-grown solution takes at least a couple weeks to stabilize, likely much longer bef

No special new logging protocol is required. So, what do I put into the redis configuration-file to make it log to itself?

Counter-question: Why am I running my sexy sweet logging solution and syslog in parallel? Because that's exactly what I'd have to do until other daemons like, say, redis itself , speak this fancy new protocol.

what value is syslog adding? The standardized network protocol? Exactly. Every piece of software under the sun either logs to syslog by default or has a config-switch/patch to make it so. Yes, syslog the protocol is pretty nasty. Yes, sys

I think you're missing the forest for the trees. What you really want to do (and what everyone does btw) is to push your logs to a central syslog-server and stream them into redis or whatever analytics solution from there.

Yes, syslog is a pile of shit. It's a relic. And I'll add it tends to ship in a horrible default configuration with events scattered randomly over multiple files, no safe-guards against filling up the disk and no safeguards to ensure the st

I'm still not getting the futz they're making over their "scale". So your inbound load is 7000 tweets/sec or roughly 250 MBit/s (assuming 4k per tweet). Then you fan that out to (assuming) 20 append-only mailboxes on average. Perhaps my ass

Did 4800 baud modems even exist in volume? I just checked wikipedia and there's indeed a protocol for them, but I've never seen one in the wild. In my day it was 300, 1200, 2400, 9600, 14400, 16800, 19200, 28800, 33600, 56k ... So, back on
