Raise the barrier to entry as high as you reasonably can. If you aren't securing your servers, running a good firewall, logging a solid audit trail remotely, sanitizing your inputs, parameterizing your sql, encrypting your credit cards, and

Absolutely. I'm pretty shocked by the amount of downtime they've been having. I've been hosting with various providers for almost 10 years. I'm now with SoftLayer and VERY happy. In those 10 years, I think I've had less combined downtime

I can't tell you why they SHOULD, but I can tell you why some might want to: Personal OS/Interface preference. I've used Windows 2k and XP for years. I find the OS X interface to be cleaner, easier, and faster to use. I just prefer it.

When both sides of the dev team BOTH want Macs, and can provide both technical reasons (which you skipped there) and have a personal preference for it, then it seems silly for the department supervisor to NOT go along with it. Plus, the cor

Localizing that sort of things is super tricky as many languages use different words for if there is one, versus 2, versus 3-5, versus 5+, so you really have to localized 3 or 4 Strings, even though in English there's only two options. I f

I'd rather work with a smart, well read person who likes to think than someone who hasn't read much. Sure asking about Ayn Rand isn't really an intelligence test, but it's not a bad start. Smart people can learn about data structures and a

Strong typing is one of the reasons that I LIKE Java. Especially on large projects it's nice knowing exactly what a variable is, and what data elements and methods are available. I hope this doesn't lead to people using sloppy typing in Ja

I'd argue that "the very best hackers" can pick and choose. "Up-and-coming" != "the very best". Maybe they'll get to be the some of the very best with some experience (work or project) under their belt, and at that point, if it's great code
