Not sure how one can imagine that SJW is a "dog-whistle term". Those of us that use it are pretty clear about what we mean.

Always figured that you get what you pay for, but in fact, Twitter/Facebook/Google aren't nearly that reliable in the long term.

To the degree that there are such people, they don't hang out here.

Heh. Careful--you may discover that there are jobs far more useless than that.

Through my long career, I've notice virtually no correlation between my pay and the utility of my position. And indeed, I've had one or two jobs like yours. Sadly for my bank book, I can only stand being useless for relatively s

On the contrary, the change has been like night and day. An invisible curtain has dropped into place, and every word is carefully cleaned and pressed. Everyone is suspect now.

Unfortunately, an inevitable result of AA-type hiring is that everyone--including the candidates themselves--will wonder whether people hired this way are really up to snuff. You can censor, but you can't stop people from reasoning in

I am some of those things, and I want that fact to be utterly ignored in a professional context. Someone who is unintentionally unkind will receive a quiet word better than a hundred codes of conduct. That's how you change hearts an

This will happen more and more, though many will not be as open about their concerns, for fear of retaliation. I grew up in a time and place where many took great steps to profess that they were the "good" people and to ensure tha

Link? In principle, I like it. But I don't think it's worth the cost of making the change. Python is accumulating a lot of stuff you have to know but that isn't that valuable. Don't want it to end up like C++. Also, t

Me, too, and I did indeed look at these and similar items. (And probably will get a pair, just for the sheer nerd value.) Would still strongly recommend the fixed-focus computer glasses, however. They only do one thing, but they do it ext

Not sure if it technically qualifies, but if your vision is fairly bad, get a pair of "computer glasses" made. These are designed to focus perfectly at the distance of your monitor. It's like getting a vision upgrade.

By all means, hipsters should also police up their poop and needles. But given the choice, I'd rather deal with that--at least it isn't usually moving toward me at high speed.

Indeed. There's an inevitable trade-off between looking for a better approach and simply executing with what you have. (cf machine learning) Suppose my boss asks me to find a good Thai restaurant for lunch. If I'm new to the ar

We must move in different circles. I've tried to sell whole teams of 20-somethings to give git a try, and they're just not having it. They know what they know, and that's it.

That's an interesting point, and may very well be true. It doesn't imply that there's a correlation between age and stagnation, though. Also, in my experience, stagnation can run in the other direction, temporally. I encoun
