These are just using the 'play' command, the aliases are just so I don't have to remember the arguments. Play is a standard package from your package manager

I keep this in my .bashrc alias brownnoise='play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth sine amod 0.3 10' It sounds like waves gently coming ashore. I'm sure I collected it somewhere here on HN, because I don't kn

I found a service, on amazon of all places, to do a film-to-digital conversion. I thought it was worth the money, and they sent back the original media and all that. In better shape than I sent it, actually--I was charged 3 bucks for a repa

Fair. I'm not a fan of any of the chain wings. Our recipe is simple: decent sized wings, deep fried naked, sauced and served. Good sauces matter, of course. Given how easy that is, it's amazing to me that almost nobody else has go

What makes the wings so good? (My business is known for its chicken wings as well, just comparing notes!)

Would it be common for a local government within a country to confirm to the law of another country? Is there a compelling reason besides being friendly? Like treaties or something?

Does this mean you've internalized it? I think that generally is a characteristic of something who's mastered something. It does make sense, but I don't think it's strictly true. You can understand something without maki

Commenting here is the only time I get to engage in chit chat about tech with anyone. I don't have any tech-interested peers in the real world. It's my slightly-more-intellectual social outlet, with a topic trend I'm very int

I think I would have put the quotes around "learn." I don't think every high school student can master advanced trig.

.22 rimfire has roughly 20-35% of the energy of 9mm, even at the muzzle. I don't even know the terminal ballistics, got to be even worse. Rimfire is also less reliable, although not nearly as unreliable as some people act like. I wou

I've not had one for a long time. My business has one, that's usually enough for me. But I've recently been thinking about getting one. I want to print templates for doing woodworking & similar in the shop.

I have not checked out a physical book in several years, but I use my library card to rent digital media (primarily audiobooks) all the time.

by mod 4y ago
In many places in the US, anyone can get a card to a library. So, if everyone had that knowledge, it actually would mean the entire world. In the county I have my card with, they give a card number over the internet without any kind of addr

"Pint" varies in the US as well, when ordering a beer. You're just gonna get whatever glass they have. They'll probably tell you if they know it's not a true pint, but I expect most bartenders have no idea.

I think: If a coffee shop opens at 5am, they say that. They never say 29. If a bar stays open UNTIL 5am, they say 29.

Thanks for taking a minute to do this, it gives a nice side-by-side for a real-world example. What a great improvement.

In theory, someone could exploit a 0-day and write this software for you. So, I recant my position that it will never happen. It could happen if you found a really talented developer who was naive enough to do it, or a nihilist or something
