Ember has a convention to resolve files in its 'app' directory from your project name, and it makes renaming files a lot easier: `import { thing } from 'my-project/thing/in/dir.js'`

Do you have some sort of failsafe in place for developers to be able to access AWS in the event of an Okta outage? Or are the Okta user sessions long-lived enough that you'd be able to mitigate some other way if Okta was down?

My organization evaluated Okta and I also came away worried about introducing another third party that had access to all of our services, both from a security perspective and as another point of failure. In particular, in Okta's SWA ap

Not in all cases, but in this particular case I think the "stepping on toes" part applies. Assuming that some percentage of repo authors do not want your proposed changes, your automated work is now now creating manual work for th

While not nearly as popular as Webpack, Broccoli.js (used by Ember, among others) exposes the DAG concept. Webpack is fine if your task roughly matches the purpose Webpack was built for, but when using it I miss the composability of Broccol

Back when I worked at LimeWire, Google refused to sell us search ads, presumably on the grounds of "promoting IP infringement". But plenty of people had taken our open source codebase, added malware, and had no problem running Goo

How do password managers make password rotation any worse? If anything, they at least keep a record of which sites need password rotation.

You may also want to consider running `unset HISTFILE` before that to ensure that the line containing your password doesn't end up sitting around in your bash history.

I wouldn't recommend using this. Even if you were to read the page source and see that it is in fact not sending data back to a third party, either a) the site owner could change this in the future, or b) you could be man-in-the-middle

Without going into who is inherently better at design choices, the problem often seems to be with the process: UX/UI designer sits down and builds some mocks, then hands them to the developer to implement. The developer sees that the m

I evaluated webpack recently and found that it worked fine for straightforward projects but the more customized I wanted it the more issues I ran into.[0] I think it’s a matter of configuration as json vs configuration as code. Webpack had

Broccoli ( https://github.com/broccolijs/broccoli ) has a really nice concept of "trees" that can be split or merged and composed together.

There are some cases where you not only care about the exact time (unix timestamps are fine for this) but also the timezone in which it was specified. I work on an app where users specify "people in california should see this at 3pm PD

Given that Gitlab is open source, adding a NewSQL DB into the mix would be pushing that dependency to downstream users, who would then have to take on the maintenance burden. It may end up being the right call from a performance standpoint

It's possible that the 5px threshold is intentional, to prevent accidental drags while trying to click a draggable object. I've seen that happen particularly with users who have touchpads.

When serving files from s3, if you care about availability it's worth using your own subdomain rather than pointing directly at S3. You can't have a subdomain point to different buckets in different regions directly, but you can p

It seems like this is the same as with video, where the client is trying to determine how many frames it needs to precache before it starts displaying. I'm not sure how much measurement capacity the server has, here?

Actually, that's not true. GMail proxies images, but doesn't do a lot in the way of caching. They actually cache the DOM when moving between messages for a short while, but a browser reload will reset it.

A project I work on has time series stats in postgres--it's essentially an interval, a period, a number of fields that make up the key, and the value. There's a compound index that includes most of the fields except for the value.

If you have multiple workers each managing their own throttling, there is a particular failure mode you may run into: everything is operating normally, then requests increase to the point that one of your servers starts throttling requests.

I think the HN-framed takeaway here is that the developer building the system could have used a timestamp + HMAC and prevented the issue, but chose not to for whatever reason. Maybe they wanted to be able to generate barcodes from the app i

Cloudfront gets much cheaper at volume, you have to commit to usage though. But it's a huge cost savings over list price.
