While wanting a ferrari as a kid may or may not make you unhappy, I don't personally know anyone who was given a ferrari as a kid and was ultimately happy. They usually tended to end up less happy than children who weren't spoiled by the

Failover across geographically distributed datacenters is a challenge that doesn't get talked about all that much. As a small company you probably aren't able to easily get your own IP block allocated (that I know of) so BGP [0] isn't reall

I was on a panel at CMU, as part of a NYC startup tour designed to encourage students to move to NYC and/or join a startup. Of all the schools we went to, the CMU event had the best attendance and students I talked to afterwards seemed the

Yeah, we're using Cassandra for logging. Not quite as simple to scale up, but it's write-only in the request cycle and hasn't been anywhere near a bottleneck yet.

Adding MX records for gmail and adding A records / CNAMEs for Heroku are pretty much orthogonal. They shouldn't conflict with each other.

My company provides dynamic content in emails, and as such gets large traffic spikes when 10 million emails get sent at once and everyone begins opening them. The content's configuration (in postgres) is trivially cacheable, but our app se

If you get into a dispute with Time Warner over your cable bill, do they gain legal rights to anything you write at home and publish on the internet? If he used AOL computers (which it sounds like he didn't) they may or may not have grounds

I think just as large a part is that it's difficult for multiple designers to contribute to a project in a meaningful way without stepping on each others' toes. Do designers often collaborate in groups of more than two? (Layer Tennis is th

Check out the Node Toolbox: http://toolbox.no.de/ It doesn't seem as fleshed out as the Ruby Toolbox ( https://www.ruby-toolbox.com ) and could use a bit more editorial for your purposes, but it's a good place to start.

It may be obvious, but don't buy a used mattress from someone you don't know in NYC. The bed bug risk means that it isn't worth it. And I don't think that $500 for mattress + bed frame is ridiculous, given that you spend roughly 1/3 of you

The only thing I don't like about the Rails routing guide is how much it talks about having a default route of `match ':controller/:action/:id'`. I would still use `match`, but any actions that are meant to be posts should add `:method =&#

There's actually two separate concerns: Mongo client's "safe" operator causes the client to see if the database threw an error and throw an error itself. Like someone mentioned, it mostly falls on the mongo clients to implement this. We m
