Font projects (especially multi-script ones) can amass (tens of) thousands of small XML files in the UFO format. Rust can load and save through them in seconds, Python can't :)

To ask the obvious, has he tried to convert the old fonts to OpenType? There are various free and proprietary tools to do that and Private Unicode Area ranges still exist.

Having recently finished N. N. Taleb's "The Black Swan", I am now wary when I see Gaussian distribution concepts applied to the stock market. The numerical study code seems to use `std`, as in standard deviation, unless I

I don't see GNOME devs going around asking people to use it? And you can do what you want on a piece of software and still have it be a "serious tool". I don't see a contradiction.

If you ever wonder why GNOME devs seem so hardnosed on issue trackers, just read comments by people demanding that they implement things users have been wanting for years :)

I cannot comment on the soundness of the decision, but what was the deal with the community here? I can for example see that Debian is community driven with all the advantages and drawbacks that come with this, but was CentOS ever more than

I don't use CentOS, but the negativity around this both surprises and does not surprise me. CentOS seemed like a way to get RHEL for free, lots of people jumped on that and suddenly, when it's no longer free, they throw a tantrum

The article deeply resonates with me. I have been annoyed so often by a website splitting content into PDFs that would have been perfectly fine as HTML. I suppose this happens because the content department makes nicely (sometimes) layouted

It's no different until raiders show up at your door. Your million dollars can be stored in assets outside your home. Also, IIRC, gold quickly lost its trading value in post WW2 Germany because, uh, you couldn't eat it.

And on other dates, it was not $773. So what? Long term, the world market (more than the US) historically averaged to 6-8% growth p.a. with dividends before inflation iirc, and the last 120 years were certainly no walk in the park for the w

You invest into something like the S&P 500 (maybe better: MSCI World/FTSE Developed World) precisely to outrun inflation. In the OP's example, the million would be worth that million, not 300k. Look up compound interest.

They should show up with their individual styles, but you can't variate them. They need to contain a STAT table to work on Windows though.

Persecution can take more forms than law enforcement. Maybe one day you'll come around to the idea that feminist ideas are valid without feminists being put into jail.

For some anecdata, compare the file sizes in the latest Cantarell release tarball from the GNOME FTP server. The compression ratio varies depending on how the variable font was made though. E.g. Noto Sans clocks in at 1.5 MB because it is m

My impression is the opposite: random users demanding that some devs spend their time on a tricky corner issue and getting angry about it. After reading their comments, I'd be very hard pressed to motivate myself to work on it.
