The logical conclusion would be that you need more frontend than backend when you're trying to scale from 0 to 1.

If you rely on public cloud infrastructure, you should understand both the advantages and disadvantages. Seems like your company forgot about the disadvantages.

Static site generators still feel like too much work for me. I am currently hosting a blog using Ghost and couldn't be happier. Fast and simple, almost no maintenance.

That's almost always the case. Most corporates are risk-averse and thus bureaucratic.

Ok, so there is impact for them? Then elaborate and be specific. I'm pretty sure that any sane manager or director will listen when you tell you them you can save on operational costs. Just be specific and explain what you can do and w

Impact is impact. Slower roll-out of future releases is already way more specific than a vague arbitrary term "technical debt", right? I challenge you to come up with a situation where technical debt is a better way to describe ac

What is the impact on the end user? Will anyone notice or care if you don't address the technical debt?

If it doesn't affect the non-technical people, is it an issue then? I tend to be on the side of your director to be honest.

It doesn't mean anything. Does a defined work package improve the product you are building in any way? Then plan the work. If not, then don't do it. I discourage using this term within my team, because it's not a transparent

This is completely the opposite of my expectation. Gathering requirements should not be a manager's task at all, let alone writing them down.

I agree 80 is too low, but it doesn't have anything to do with 4k monitors, it's just that 80 is too short. Any longer than 120 is not readable imo. Luckily Black lets you change the line length so it's not an issue.

HTML is not code imo. With React (and thus Next) you can treat your frontend code as full-fledged functions and objects.

I disagree. Expressing your frontend layout as code is not over engineering at all imo. It makes it easier to re-use code and is great for testability. Next is perfect for this use case. I actually think the code is quite elegant too. It&#x

On my iPhone Xr, older than S10, it loads very fast. Also performance depends on which page you benchmark. Landing page is faster for UK, but the cases pages is about twice as fast for the NL dashboard (time to interactive 2.4s for NL vs 4.

I agree. For example, the Dutch corona dashboard (coronadashboard.rijksoverheid.nl) is a statically rendered dashboard using Next that gets updated daily. No backend and it's super fast. Maybe I'm not objective because I'm Du

I also believe the advance of HDR is at fault here. 90% of the runtime of a show or movie the colors are muted to have an additional "pop" in the remaining 10%.

I think NFT and blockchain are legitimate technologies. However, the hype around them is totally inflated by a gold rush on the premise of a pyramid scheme (cryptocurrencies literally are pyramid schemes). NFTs are real, but also 99% scam.

The fundamental problem is that problems with centralized platforms are attributed to centralization, and thus decentralization is seen as the answer. This is entirely false. Centralization and decentralization are just words that have an o

Ironically a webhook is closer to a true event than polling for events on the /events endpoint. The idea described in this article seems entirely backwards.

That's what I'm always saying too. Crypto is used for two things: criminal activities and convincing others to buy into your crypto so your crypto portfolio increases in value. The second thing can also be considered a criminal ac

Apparently it's unfathomable that detailed, reasoned and thoughtful comments are actually critical of web 3. Here's a thought: could it be that web 3 actually deserves some legitimate criticism? Maybe HN is right and you're w
