The purchase of a Rolex or Ferrari - or an incredibly overpriced sound system - is an attempt to buy a signal to others that you have taste. In fact you’re signaling how much your lack of taste is costing you. Sound gear is an excellent cas

Thanks for posting this - I only noticed your reply now. Exactly this. Installing inverters for my own projects is what really highlighted the amp/volts/gaugerelationship. I quickly moved to 24V and will push for 48V for my next.

Same logic could be applied to Linux by Microsoft in the 90s. In fact, the “It’s for your safety” has been applied to some of the worst things humans have perpetrated including apartheid (which I lived through) and the holocaust. And it’s a

I think the release of closed source models right now is a net negative and worth opposing. Right now we’re building a future where the very wealthy and powerful will control access to AI on ethical grounds, while they have uncensored acces

This was the smart approach when Shazam launched in 2008. I would have done exactly the same thing - gone straight to developing a method to turn every song into a hash as computationally efficiently as possible. If you launched this today

Until you’ve actually failed hard for a very long time - over a decade - and then get a solid kick in the teeth for your efforts, and power through that shit with an optimistic attitude to succeed beyond your own expectations, it’s hard to

Many labs doing foundational work like this and making progress don’t have the anything near the budget or compute to implement at scale. In other words they don’t have a Sam and his backers or a Zuck and his budget.

That’s a strong argument for nationalization of large businesses. Competition fosters innovation, and monopoly kills it. Competition with larger companies gave birth to Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft.
