There's a command line compiler option to avoid reliance on VC++ redist: /MT (in release mode) or /MTd (in debug mode). Default is /MD (in release mode) or /MDd (in debug mode). With /MT or /MTd Microsoft

It's no big deal as long as JIT compiled code is restricted to the safe subset of instructions. For example, in FreeBSD BPFs (berkeley packet filters) are JIT compiled and directly executed in the kernel mode.

According to [1], on recent Intel CPUs, each instruction is translated by hardware decoder to up to four micro-ops: either trivial micro-ops like addition, subtraction, bitwise and/or/xor, or a special "microcode assist"

Usually there's no need to convert NFA to DFA. NFA can be simulated directly, i.e. by using bit vector instead of integer for state accounting. Also, no backtracking is necessary to simulate an NFA.

I use Far Manager (with plugins, e.g. Colorer and NetBox) on Windows (in ConEmu). Total Commander and other GUI based filemanagers are too far disconnected from command line, in my opinion.

If dedup is off, and max ARC size is limited, it will use a little memory (e.g. 512 Mb of RAM for 2x2TB RAID1 pool). I can say that from my own experience, I tried both approaches.

It's also worth noting that FreeBSD used to rely on M:N threading model (via libkse) then switched to 1:1 threading model (via libthr).

Ah, now I see these things changed recently. I wrote original comment because at the time of Go 1.1 or 1.2 my colleague wrote racy code which accessed global variable without mutexes. I tried to educate him to use mutexes, by reducing his c

You are talking about high advancements in the compiler research. But is there any statistically significant performance difference between the code compiled via latest GCC vs. OpenWatcom (which is unmaintained for a few decades)?

Well, using the terminal instead of explorer in Windows because people don't like the mouse is quite extreme, but using the Far Manager for the same reason is more common, at least in my environment.

Also code produced by LLVM-based languages can be linked with low-level modules written in pure C/C++, or even assembly, if necessary. So one may quickly prototype and then slowly rewrite the software for performance, module by module.
