I 95% agree with this article, but think that 5% is an important disagreement. Background: I spent most of the last decade writing, maintaining, and managing a large enterprise app that had to evolve from its .NET 1.1 foundations to the pre

Microsoft was a monopoly. Apple is a niche player. Antitrust laws don't apply to companies with 20% of the market.

Good justification/hyphenation requires Javascript, yes. That's still an existing weakness. But there is absolutely pagination control. HTML + CSS isn't perfect, of course, but the difference between HTML and professional ty

His resume could look much better; he's using Georgia (a system font) and not using the OpenType features enabled by modern CSS. LaTeX's hyphenation and math have no (non-JS) match in HTML/CSS, but just about everything else

Yes. CSS (in Chrome and Firefox and modern IE; not Safari, despite Apple's typographical reputation) supports OpenType features like ligatures, stylistic alternates, kerning, true small caps (not using the CSS font-variant property, us

It is easy for me to see jaggies on a 300 dpi device (the N7 and N10 are both in that ballpark, as was my old 720p phone). You can too -- go to a browser, and type "www" and then look at those letters. The jaggies are just what yo

Keep in mind that the iPhone 6 is a very large phone for a 4.7" device. Because of its huge bezels, it's actually taller than the 5" Nexus 5.

The negative/cynical take: They're rearranging their internal deck chairs and spending time and effort on making their code pretty, rather than changing TypeScript (maligned, little-used, and little-loved) to be more relevant some

To your two pricing questions, the answer is "sure, but": 1. Verizon, as a monopolist, is already pricing its service at the level that extracts the most revenue while remaining within the envelope of whatever loose regulation th

Ten lines of Python? That's a one-liner in Perl, and not one of those over-long ones. So I'd be careful about using that as proof that your language is safe from encroachment. Really, the time that people start posting "Why L

It seems notable that trying to run a modern computer without Google is about as quixotic as was trying to run a '90s-era computer without Microsoft.

Performance is temporary, design is forever. (Remember that the slur against Emacs -- itself once considered by some too heavyweight to compete with vi -- was that it used "eight megs" of memory.)

The region thing (along with vim modes) is probably one of the biggest pieces of pushback I've gotten from the piece, and I think it certainly has some merit to it. If you can use movement commands to define a region, and then act on

I certainly don't think it's a dichotomy; I explicitly want an editor that combines composability with extensibility. And while vim-mode is impressive, I don't think it's really quite enough, unfortunately. Because the p

Articles like this one annoy me, because it's easy to diagnose big problems -- here, watch me do it: "Why should compilers choke if you forget a semicolon? If they can diagnose a syntax error, can't they also fix it? Can'

In practice, a lot of vim stuff ends up being muscle memory, too -- anything you use frequently, you don't think about consciously. It's the less frequent stuff where the composability really comes into conscious play.
