No. Fortran (1957) uses 1-based indexing by default. Probably because matrix and vector indexing in maths is usually 1-based.

Bike gears have had numbers for many decades. The ancient (even then) Raleigh 20 I had as a kid had gear numbers (3), though searching now I see some Raleigh 20s had names instead. Every non-road-bike I've had since has had clearly v

Proving properties and computing values are quite different things, and proofs can absolutely be done on Turing machines, e.g. with proof assistants like Lean.

In my experience (maths degrees at two universities with >15000 students, one of which I now teach at) group theory and abstract algebra more generally are much more likely to be part of a maths degree than topology. I've never hea

Having the features is not nearly as much use if the whole thing's too slow to use. I frequently get mamba taking multiple minutes to figure out how to install a package. I use and like Anaconda and miniforge, but their speed for pac

My reason is the combination of a good command line and also easy use of native GUI apps. The main problem is that operations involving lots of little files can be slow (WSL1 is better than WSL2 at this).

Agreed. My mum learned basic Fortran at university in the early 1970s, before Ada existed. (It was done on punch cards, and they had to wait a day or so to find out if their programs worked!)

I'm not suggesting a separate server or a Raspberry Pi (that was just an example of the low resource needs), just having non-dynamic pages to not be hitting the database, so be cached somewhere (hopefully automatically), or using a ser

Problematic design. It's a static page, and should be served as such; a Raspberry Pi could probably handle that, and it's easy to put behind Cloudflare or similar.

Building a big deep water harbour is a piece of cake compared to building a space elevator, and has been done for centuries, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherbourg_Harbour .

There are two other phis with the (non-mathematical) Greek letters earlier, but unfortunately fonts vary in which one they display as \phi or \varphi: φ (U+03CD), ϕ (U+03DC).

I always cross my zs in maths to distinguish them from 2s, but in some countries they cross the 2s to distinguish them from zs, so the ambiguities remain.
