I love Linux on the laptop. I previously used it on a desktop computer for many years and the experience wasn't nearly as good.

They definitely matter to recruiters and their web spiders. The meme that has been circulating recently about LinkedIn job descriptions vs the actual jobs is deeper than it seems.

Build your resume and your Github repos and they will come. I get cold emailed with job offers for US companies once in a while. When your LinkedIn profile has keywords like "senior" and "lead" you start getting scraped.

Why limit it to open source? You wouldn't let an engineer build a bridge with car-sized holes just because the blueprint is not open.

The Rings of Power is beautiful, but it feels like an MMORPG. The journey is epic but the endgame is so so. I wouldn't mind some more dwarven architecture.

This looks like overengineering to me. The frontend cannot be that dumb. Every modern frontend technology out there can parse a bunch of JSON efficiently. If for whatever reason you don't want to call a few REST endpoints to render s

The problem with Youtube's recommendations is that they are not organic. Producing ad revenue is its main goal. This makes YT fundamentally different than a decade ago, when the algorithm just wanted to show you some genuinely interest

It happens all the time in Europe. Collaboration between public and private companies is pretty much a pipe dream in the EU. Some company that actually works on building search technology would achieve way more than a bunch of professors. I

I would be shocked if Alphabet spent >5% on search. But even 1% would dwarf this project.

The question then shifts to why this hacker is posting some early footage. You would expect the newer stuff to be immediately accessible without searching etc. This is allegedly the same guy who hacked Uber and called them out for underpayi

Yup. The average company lets their employees paste credentials on Slack, email them, etc. and they are allowed to be things like "password". The challenge is not really to hack them, is being willing to do it.

It's been 9 years and this footage looks like a moderate improvement over GTA V. On the other hand, GTA V was released 9 years after San Andreas and the improvement was huge. Is it tech debt, API complexity, financial hurdles, or somet

My memories of learning Java at school are tied to learning Eclipse shortcuts. Whenever I had to use some other Java IDE it just felt crippling. Having to use something like this wouldn't have been nice at all.

It happens all the time at small to mid sized startups. Some senior employees quit and form another startup. Their former company struggles to replace them and slowly dies, or becomes a small business.

At most places I've worked being a senior engineer mostly meant being patient and being good at countering management's bullshit. Those two traits can get you far.
