The cost of this fire was $85b. If this sort of event could be avoided or mitigated by disincentivising the behaviour that caused it (by putting the occasional exec in prison for negligence) I guess it's likely prison would be quite a

NixOS is great. I use it as my daily driver. But. In my experience, your distro will never have all the software you would like in its repos. And I've found this is true of NixOS also. So it should be mentioned that some software does

I acknowledge that this is a classic HN comment, but a git repo on a VPS with Unix file permissions meets all of your criteria with very low effort.

I've found the French and Spanish short stories for beginners with downloadable audio to be a really useful tool. They're pretty mundane stories about everyday life aimed at adult learners.

I don't think that's completely fair. They do provide the 300USD credit, valid for 12 months after sign-up. And in response to another commenter below, in many countries I believe they allow sign-up for this trial with a bank acco

I found Cambridge salaries weren't wonderful in general, though I'm aware that's probably changing, and there are exceptions. How have you found Edinburgh salaries compare? Obviously I don't expect data, just an anecdote

I think what GP means is make the anchor links easier to find, such that one can right-click somewhere in the UI and copy an anchor link to a comment. I'm not aware that they're available anywhere, presumably you constructed the

I wonder, did you develop this idea yourself? I ask because it sounds similar to the central idea in the book Sapiens, and if you haven't read that I expect you'd appreciate it. At least for the sense of satisfaction you might get

I agree. I shared the quote because I found it concise, insightful and relevant. I do wonder, though, whether meritocracy has gotten away with itself somewhat. It has enormous utility. But in its current incarnation doesn't seem to res

Many cyclists travel quickly enough they find that having to give way at every side road (like a pedestrian would) is a tremendous hassle. If these routes were unbroken (as they are in a few places) this would be a great solution.

That's awful reasoning for using the cycle lane to turn, but (having never used it) I prefer the rule itself. Assuming the driver acknowledges they're changing lanes when they move into the bike lane, and checks appropriately, it&

But there's no referendum on that. My main point is that the referendum wasn't very sensible and should probably always have had two stages. X = "What kind of Brexit do we want" then "remain vs. X". I expect &q

I'm going to paraphrase the referendum choices here. 1. The status quo. 2. Imagine how things could be better. Don't constrain your imagination with realism. It's a wonder option 2 only won by 2 percent. The only democratic w
