There was that time Apple bought 1.25 billion dollars worth of flash [1]. And it's later made similar payments for similar things [2,3]. 220 billion in the bank is pretty excessive, but 1.5 billion is way too low for the sorts of thi

I disagree. This is an interesting article explaining what is happening to Intel and why. But you're not the target audience if you know this already; every piece of information in this article would be novel and interesting to someo

In MLs, you can often replace what would be a typeclass in haskell with idiomatic uses of functors (parameterized modules). It gets kind of hairy if you do it a lot, though.

English and Spanish hold their positions as popular languages based on the fact they were both spoken in world spanning empires in the past, not because they are particularly simple. English, in particular, is known for being difficult to l

I wasn't a user for a long time, but now that I am, I have to say that Instagram is really pleasant to use. It's just photographs, which gives it a pleasant simplicity other social networks lack. It's nice to occasionally c

This seems incredibly unlikely. Anyone with a good machine shop and some fissile material can build a fission bomb in their garage (ok, it's not that easy). But fusion bombs are another beast altogether. Fusion bombs work by settin

I have heard the claim that this style dates to the introduction of typewriters, which required an ordering of the characters. Beforehand, it was customary to print the quotation marks over the period, which can be done on a printing pres

In SF, the Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed the Embarcadero highway. It was never rebuilt, but that didn't really cause problems.

Not in CS, but there is a strong tradition of hosting copies on personal websites. The ACM is generally pretty lax on that, but technically they own the copyright.

I am confused by this. In CS, at least, on publication the ACM generally receives the copyright to the paper, so I don't understand how any faculty or students could actually change the terms of the license.

Possibly this could be gotten around with by having the good site serve its own idea of what the hash should be. This would be much smaller than the actual resource.
