Evidence? Most people don't think about prison when they are committing crimes. They might think about whether they will be caught.

Wise people know that they don't know everything and are able to realize that even if they know a lot, someone else may know more about X than they do and absorb their perspective.

Even the dig at Fortran is silly. Most numerical libraries and subroutines are still implemented in Fortran and you have to figure out how to call them from other languages (e.g. scipy, numpy).

The reality is that's not how research works. Inspiration and breakthroughs don't come out of thin air; they come from the freedom to interact with other scientists, process their ideas and work, and then combine them with a new p

Not saying it's what happened here, but an unfortunate consequence of the publicity machine is that it's a lot easier to bullshit, overhype, and sell a story with certainty and simplicity than to be honest and talk about the detai

I'd love to try this to induce lucid dreaming, but I'm not sure about the unknown health risks of electrical stimulation to my head for hours.

MSR has been around for a while, with quite a bit of freedom, and still is a far cry from the accomplishments of Bell Labs (maybe time will tell, though.)

Interdisciplinary work is incredibly hard to pull off in academia due to tribal affiliations. I think the MSR NYC lab (where I work), which consists of computer scientists, economists, and other social scientists, is one of the few places I

It seems like running in a VM is a much more attractive option than dual booting these days. The performance hit is negligible (especially with 16GB RAM), you can use both OSes at the same time, and you can use all the native Windows touch&

I run Linux on a VM inside my Surface Pro 2. Best of both worlds. All the touch and pen gestures are handled by Windows and carry over through VirtualBox. Would love to get a Surface Book as soon as possible.

In economic terms, might we think about this as someone who is maximizing a utility function for social welfare rather than individual welfare? I always thought some of my reasoning about the world was rather strange and hard to comprehend.
