I have a personal theory, that I haven't really been able to confirm or deny. Here it is. After Hiroshima and during the cold war nuclear energy was associated with death and destruction. Hiroshima for obvious reasons, and the cold war beca

A good friend of mine had an amazing experience showing what blind people are capable of. He overheard a middle aged man who had obviously been blind for a long time schooling a young girl who had recently gone blind on how to get around. T

In my country social security numbers consist of two numbers, and mine consists of two twin primes. Probably the only one in the country. This is something I can only brag about on HN :-)

No they are not - and a lot of people misunderstand why. It's true that in any normal year more people die from known diseases, and that pandemics are a rare occurrence. But when they happen they kill a lot of people. The 1918 flu pandemi

In Denmark we have "denmarks Radio" which is basically a state owned tv, web and radio media outlet whose purpose it is to educate the populace. This changes the incentives, because the income is from the state whose goal is to have educate

Yes, sorry about the redundancy - the downside of having lots of tabs open for a while is that you don't see all the new comments. But you know what they say - great minds think alike :-)

The premise of the article is flawed - it's not about where the old programmers have gone, but whether they were there to begin with. If you think a bit about it it's fairly obvious. Programming is a relatively new profession that has been

I think it is, based on the fact that (as I mentioned in the GP) wealth follows a powerlaw distribution. I don't see why options wouldn't follow this trend, particularly because market cap of companies in an economy also follows a powerlaw.

I think someone's skewing the poll. Personal wealth follows a powerlaw distribution, and there's good reason to believe that income from stock options is somewhat similar. If you look at the numbers above they make reasonably sense except f

HN is the best tech news aggregator on the net. Where do you think Larry, Sergey, Eric, and Tim get their news from? There are probably a lot more household tech names on HN than you'd initially expect.

Here's another total usability fail: Tab sends the e-mail you're currently writing instead of indenting text. Everywhere else tab indents text, and when you write an e-mail in gmail you'd expect it to act consistently with how it's used eve

It's a bad way of dealing with terrorism. It's in the name - it's all about terrorising, and the Boston bombers have certainly succeded in that. With this whole spectacle you've let two guys with very little resources put the whole nation i

Some of the most interesting, candid and thought provoking posts and comments are from anonymous users. I can easily see why the OP wants to remain anonymous, and I think we should respect that. Here's an example: https://news.ycombinator.
