The OP admits that he didn't even try to answer the question. The interviewer basically gave him the answer, but he didn't ask for help or ask if he could look up setTimeout. The OP's takeaway seems to be that he should have

It can be a huge problem depending on the query that the server is running and the amount of traffic on the site. Avoiding completely useless auto-complete queries is fairly low-hanging fruit since it's so easy to fix.

It would depend on whether they're looking for a promising candidate or somebody who is already experienced. If they wanted the later then it would be obvious this was not the guy. Still, I think spending 5 extra minutes of your life

It probably is a bit of both but there's no question that they are dead-on about many of the obnoxious and egomaniacal aspects of HN.

They dodged the hardest issues and politics by piggy-backing on the actual site to obtain the data. So you cannot really say that they did what the government contractors were unable to do. But without a doubt they eliminated all of the cr

Their site doesn't ask for any data except your zip code then forwards you on. Where does HIPA come into play?

This is pretty much identical to what eBay and PayPal have been doing to sellers for years. They do offer "seller protection", though, which guarantees that that will come up with a valid reason for taking your money away when a

You're missing the point. What you are not realizing is how many people actually fail fizzbuzz. If it seems so simple and useless to you because it's easy, then you are not one of the people who will ever be weeded out by a fiz

To me fizzbuzz eliminates certain types of candidates who have absolutely no reasoning skills. You would be surprised at how many people are out there who have learned how to regurgitate lessons from school but seemingly have no clue how t

Exactly. Good clients will understand "hey, this guy just saved us $150k". Bad clients will think "I just paid a programmer to do nothing!" Learning to recognize and get rid of those bad clients (or convert them into go

My sarcasm detector is showing erratic results from your post. AJAX was 3 years from being invented and John Resig was about 10 years old in 1995. Perhaps a whooshing sound should be made though, if I didn't get the joke..?!

The tricky part is often convincing a client that pre-planning is a necessary part if the process and, though it is billable time, will ultimately save money. Many client don't appreciate that programming is not just writing code. Als

Of course everybody would like their team to be all "A" level players. But unless you work at an elite startup with a tiny team and buckets of cash - you have to learn how to build a team from players of all levels. An all &quo

I have been on both sides if this, although as a boss I have always tried to give others the glory and take the heat. Also I probably do swoop in with ideas, but I don't leave people high and dry to figure them out. The solution is re

Absolutely a great manager will inspire and motivate the team,. But, it is called "work" for a reason. Its a two way street. The employee has to put forth some effort as well. Your manager is not there to entertain you. At th

Same thing has happened to me though I'm older and just trying to work and stay current in technology. I deleted all of the social apps on my phone, then installed a browser extension on my desktop that limits you to X minutes per day

Nobody really says "here is a task I am delegating to you." Delegation sounds more like "I need this by Friday" or "How long will XYZ take?" or "Let's put this task on the top of your priority list." Learning to delegate tasks is a tricky
