"For a start, I dont think we should be second guessing their design" Really? I guess you are right that this conversation is over. I'm sorry, but Lifehacker is not the end-all-be-all design mecca of the 21st century, quite the contrary, in

Cool, thanks for the link. If I understood correctly from your article, supernodes are basically Skype clients that act as distributed servers used for discovery of other clients. But I imagine authentication has to happen against a Skype s

While I congratulate Skype on reaching 40M simultaneous users, I am somewhat disappointed that there was no mention of how the 40M people can stay online without melting Skype's servers. Some architectural insight would have been nice from

The discussion is about two different things: 1. The amount of money offered for the author's work 2. Imploring others to not take "lowball" offers in order to preserve a certain pricing/business model. Regarding #1: Everyone is allowed to

What you describe is politics in a capitalist society. An argument can't be won on morality alone anymore - there must be strong financial incentive at play. Personally, I am at least glad that there is an "out" of this mess, however low th

If you worked in a "traditional" corporate environment, you would know why it's offensive. General rule of thumb is, don't say it if you wouldn't say it to your mother. I certainly wouldn't say that to my mother. Edit: to elaborate, corpora

I'll second news.yahoo.com. It's better than Google's layout, and you can dive right into subregions of the world to get more specific world news. Also, nba.yahoo.com has a better layout than nba.com itself for following stats and even foll

Netflix doesn't let you connect over a data connection, IIRC. Well, unless you're tethering, but then you're killing your tethering device's data usage...

Indeed, as Aaron above mentioned, ARC doesn't absolve the programmer of the responsibility of proper memory management, it's just less overhead to have to worry about.

Well, you don't have to "unlearn" it. It's actually a good thing you went through the "pain" of learning it pre-ARC because if you understand how reference counting actually works, you will be able to make better and more informed decisions

To me the hardest thing is the seemingly arbitrary CG functions in Quartz2D and why they're so interspersed throughout the code. If I'm writing within the UIKit most of the time, and then have to make my own UIView for some custom drawing,

A word of caution with ARC -- you still have to release certain things manually, for example CGImageRefs with CFRelease if you're doing any sort of image manipulation.
