I think you need to differentiate between knowing about something and knowing about the precise label something has.

Technically, VCs are not loaning you money. They’re more likely betting on you. It’s true that maybe they’ll be more reluctant to place big bets, but as with everything in life the VC optimism is cyclical.

A friend that’s more optimistic about Strong AI once said that the ML that goes on today will probably serve the purpose of driving the peripheral sense organs of a future AI. Although it stretches a bit what’s possible today I could see th

I would not call it the “AI winter”. If you look at what people have called AI over time, the definition and the approaches have evolved (sometimes drastically) over time. Instead of being stuck on the fact that deep learning and the curren

Thanks. I was already doing this even though I don’t know of any law that requires it where I live. You learn something every day.

Pardon my ignorance: what is a “move over” law? What do you need to do?

Like despair in short sprints? Agile despair? In all seriousness, in my experience, all things worthwhile are not started as an “official” project. They start either as a skunkworks project or something someone does on the side.

People are suckers for complex, over-engineered things. They associate mastering complexity with intelligence. Simple things that just work are boring / not sexy. I’ll be in my corner doing asking “do we really need this?”/“have y

My favorite, goto, on this one: https://blog.acolyer.org/2016/02/10/how-complex-systems-fail... The truth is that by “fixing” the root cause you will sometimes destabilize the complex system you are running.

Yeah. Thanos had a vision and executed on it. Depending on who tells the story one could easily see him as the hero.

Multiple things: 1) Camunda w/ a Postgres RDS DB. Works for more complex stuff that’s expressed in BPMN 2) If the workflow involves mostly automated stuff and is not running for years, AWS SWF (usually coupled with an API for checkpoin

Hah. The tricky part is that some people will learn, some won’t. Some people will look back and cherrypick only things that worked and call it experience. At the end of the day, the question to ask is: who is responsible for the product? If

yes. you're bored. yes. it sucks. But why is this megacorp less efficient than a small company?

I would tend to agree and rephrase the observation as "the lack of efficiency is due to the added redundancy needed to ensure a higher likelihood of business continuity"

While I think everyone would agree that as an engineer you may look at things in a different light this does not explain it. Let’s not make this about engineering. This is a psycho that deserves to be isolated from society for what he did.

this may be an unpopular opinion (especially if the stock is doing well) but I've also done the exact same thing (sell on vest + diversify).

How would a self driving car be impacted by a failure like this? Can the onboard computer still drive the car (and has a sense there’s something wrong w/ the steering) or is it just dead in the water?

What’s your opinion of languages that can do stuff like this, dynamically at runtime? And it’s even better: you can define, augment, redefine or remove classes at runtime.
