That is a cool idea because the spreadsheets are probably not backed up so you have no reference to compare it to. This is not exactly the case in the markets. For instance when I send my order into NASDAQ, I get an order accept message bac

I guess there are kind of two things people worry about with electronic markets and hacking. One is just crashing the market so that nobody can trade for some period of time. The other is actually stealing funds from one or more market part

There is no evidence the hackers got anywhere near NASDAQ's actual exchange networks (gateways, matching engines, etc). This whole article is ridiculously hyperbolic.

I can't speak to the laws in Europe, but in the US I'm fairly certain this would be classified as securities fraud and would be subject to civil and criminal penalties. This is not a smart way to make money in the stock market.

I'm not a lawyer, but I did just read a book† written by a lawyer†† about this topic. I think it's possible that it can vary state to state, but in Delaware (a very popular place to form corporations) the law††† says: The busines

I think you are misunderstanding the way corporations are organized. All corporations must have a board of directors, and the board of directors is the ultimate top level decision making entity within the corporation. The board is always in

I actually googled around for SEC form 4 exemptions related to mortgage expenses and couldn't find anything, which kind of makes me think there is no such exemption. Are you sure you didn't just dream this up?

This is a systemic problem here in the US. It would be counterproductive to try and single out one actor when the issue needs to be address comprehensively.

I don't think EDGAR is outsourced. I think EDGAR is a project run by the SEC. There appears to be a separate company called EDGAR Online which is all about taking data from the SEC's EDGAR and making it more palatable for institut

It's much more likely that I am misquoting what Bjarne Stroustrup said than that Bjarne Stroustrup doesn't know what is or isn't valid C++. Anyway I found the slide deck from the talk. He was making this point while discussin

Last year I saw Bjarne Stroustrup give a talk about C++ and one of the things he pointed out was that a modern C++ compiler can still compile 40 year old C code. He thought the backwards compatibility was a strength and was one of the reaso

I think #1 is obviously a huge issue. I am less convinced about #2. A lot of the tech IPOs in the past few years (mod Zynga?) have done well since the IPO. I Andreesen's argument about shorts driving the price to zero is kind of silly.
