Ported to apple silicon before Asahi is definitely a stretch, single cpu core, storage "barely" working with several hacks, graphics simialrly. Iirc they still required the Asahi folk to do a lot of the heavy lifting for device t

Karakeep has to be one of my favorite regular uses of local AI. Sometimes it really is just the small, background, private things like bookmarks rather than something trying to poorly replace a frontier model. Its right up there for me with

> Software Homogenization and Interface Uniformity While I do prefer the DIY route, I'd struggle to call that "enshitified". Vensors consolidated around solutions because they work reliably, without reinventing the wheel.

To play devil's advocate, when someone says "Chinese made" they're usually well aware of your point, and are more using it as a common way to describe product mills spitting out countless devices with dubious quality or

Theres nothing about the moonlander that forces you to not be QWERTY though, and I'd bet most people are in fact on QWERTY with it. Do you mean hard to quit staggered keyboards? As in the rows dont line up in a grid. Personally I'

Confounding by indication. People who spend more time outdoors are more likely to try to wear sunscreen, as are people who already got a lot of pre-existing risk to excessive sun exposure. Key word on try as its greatly assuming there isnt

I'd argue closer 75%. Vendor abuse of this is hardly restricted to monitors, even if this is one of the more egregious cases.

Arent most these apps just BirdNET either cloud processed or bundled into a mobile app? Personally I found BirdNET-Go and formerly the old php nightmare of scripts BirdNET-Pi were pretty neat to locally analyze and track what birds would co

Its unfortunate the average consumer has little means to meaningfully combat this. Smart TV have malicious apps? GG. Some app that bundled in the SDK? Good luck for them to detect it. Even "free" vpns I wouldnt put it past some fo

An unfortunately large amount of people unknowingly having their network resold for residential vpns too. Blocking http1.1 is reasonable imo, its been over a decade since just about every browser has supported it. Anyone on a browser that o

I just use one those awtrix clones made by ulanzi, multiple open source firmwares for it since esp32 based. NTP, http api for displaying alerts, and mqtt support No need for me to reinvent the wheel, works a treat mounted above my monitor

While I definitely agree about video decoding, encoding still is a valuable measure. With inter-frame delivery codecs the hw encoder always focuses on speed, with a lean towards file size as well. It makes sense for most consumer use cases.

idk I'd rather run both sunshine and steam in a container nice and decently isolated rather than just have the compositor be a separate instance with moonshine scales nicer for multiple clients, keeps dependencies far away from my host

I think people focus far too much on the temperature of LED street lights and rarely on the CRI. The night will still feel odd and "soulless" even with 2700k LED street lamps so long as they're still the absolute worst CRI. D

Weird hate boner this author has against Apple. Its one thing to poach talent, its another to train them on how to steal as much IP from their current employers as possible before they're out the door. Thats not exactly a matter of &qu

I will never let Sloppify or similar define my music tastes. I still do digital music discovery the old fashion way, and enjoy several TBs of music with nary a single western publicly released album in sight.

Some those budget atom devices were also rather annoying for having only a 32 bit uefi despite a 64 bit cpu >4GB of ram. Could still boot into a 64 bit OS, just was a bit of a confusing hiccup you'll still see people running into fr

As others have said, most are dumb, some just slightly less so. A few captured nonce values and a dictionary attack will crack most with ease.

I’m inclined to believe in a future a bit less binary and more MR in general. Devices that can handle a variety of experiences from 1% augmented to 100% virtual.
