The only reason there isn’t an official Markdown spec is that John Gruber blocked the effort at creating one. A bunch of people made a great spec that eliminates all the ambiguities and tried to make it “Standard Markdown”. Gruber then thre

Yeah, as someone whose name contains non-ASCII characters, the association with ASCII is not exactly a positive one. I’ve wasted so much time dealing with data in non-Unicode encodings over my career that the mere word ASCII makes me want t

This assumes that owners of functioning Win10 machines will decide to throw them away just to get Win11. I don’t think that’s a reasonable assumption for the large majority of users. If someone cares enough about having the latest (if not g

Great explanation. LiveView is such a life changer for building fast and interactive interfaces without having to build a separate client-side application.

There’s a couple of approaches to this problem under development: 1. Bakeware “bakes” your application together with the entire Erlang/OTP/Beam/Elixir stack into a single binary. Given the “batteries included” philosophy of O

You can see the point of requiring people to actually have installed (and played) the game before reviewing it. The Metro Enhanced Edition is just an edge case that slipped through the cracks. I’d think Hacker News would be the first to sym

High time indeed. There are plenty of good alternatives: Vivaldi, Brave, Microsoft Edge, Firefox The first three are all Chromium-based, so their rendering is identical to Chrome’s, just without all the Google creepiness.

Not quite, browsers have slightly different implementations here, we recently had to stop using this because we had customers using IDN e-mails like hansi@lübeck.de and this would fail validation in some browsers (but not others).

People love to quote the RFCs, digging up examples of weird things that are technically allowed in e-mail addresses, but not widely used or supported. Frankly, I don’t give a damn about supporting some l33t h4x0r wanting to be clever about

Yes, since that’s basically been dictated by the U.S. Government. That does not mean the banks over here are using ASCII. Very systems generally use whatever national encoding was used before Unicode (ISO-8859-1 aka Latin 1 in my case) and

I think you will find that non-U.S. banks don’t use ASCII for this exact reason. A transliteration is arguably not someone’s legal name, and furthermore it’s kinda rude to demand that we mangle our names to fit someone’s 1970s technology sy

I’m sure all the crypto fans are lining up around the block to tell us that their pet technology doesn’t waste valuable resources, it just uses storage that would otherwise have gone unused, as they do with Bitcoin and electricity.
