From my experience this is very much true of the current state of real-time rendering (and there's nothing really wrong with that, because it's just not possible to run anything resembling physically accurate algorithms in real-ti

It has been quite cool so far this year. My experience moving to NYC from northern CA three years ago has been: 1st summer (2014) I got by without an AC (but with fans) and it wasn't that bad. 2nd summer (2015) was quite agonizingly ho

Have you tried to focus on something that is under 1 foot from your eyes in VR? From my experience it is virtually impossible, and I think the cause is related to this problem (not 100% sure though).

It seems pretty clear Oculus is going to announce the ship date on the touch controllers at Oculus Connect (in October) and there are games launching that use them in November/December, so it seems safe to assume it is happening in the

I bought one of these about a year ago because I got sick of paying $80 for new Macbook chargers, and it has worked really well so far: http://pythoncords.com/ The idea is to reinforce the place that usually breaks. I'

Ultima 7 (parts 1 and 2) are also my favorite games ever! I almost have "real" memories from the worlds and plotlines in those games, they were so vivid. Out of curiosity, what was your role on Ultima 7? Do you know of any good ar

That is true, but the CV1 (consumer version) headset will have 2 separate screens that can be moved independently, which is something you can't get with a phone attached to a headset.

The first time I heard of bloom filters was back when I worked at Google a decade ago (on the search indexing team). We used them in MapReduces when doing cross-machine table lookups. The idea was to load the bloom filters into memory on th

Ah, okay, cool. Never visited the NY office. That's probably why I just remember the general idea that "JS execution was being worked on."

As an aside, did you work on the indexing team at Google? I was on the indexing team from 2005-2007, and I remember that Javascript execution was being worked on then, but I don't remember who was doing it (was a long time ago ;) ). My

Yeah, and it's also something that most people have probably never tried to do before in their entire lives. It strikes me as an odd choice to test for dementia.

Does something like this exist for Javascript? In particular I am looking for a function that tests whether a character is CJK or not.

I really enjoyed the style in which this post was written. It was hilarious and really engaging. It was also interesting to read through all the details of the hack.

I don't think it's sad at all. It's great that Notch is doing what makes him happy. And honestly, I think he's much more likely to continue to do things that benefit the world if he follows this intuition rather than fee

This article (which I enjoyed) reminded me of a paper [1] I co-authored a long time ago about protecting 3D content using a remote rendering system. The big advantage that we had over 2D content (images) is obviously that we never gave clie

EVERY time someone calls with this issue, it is fixed with the click of a button that deauthorizes their iMessage token. This is false. I just called 1-800-MY-APPLE (details in my reply to GP) and they said I had already deactivated iMess

I am incredibly annoyed with Apple about this same issue. I also switched to a Nexus 5. I called the number you listed, and they confirmed that iMessage is already turned off for that number (which I did on my iPhone after switching to a

One thing this article doesn't address (as far as I can see) is the efficiency of updates to a document in a key-value store in Postgres. If I'm using hstore/PLV8/XML, how efficient is it to add to or update the document incrementally? (Say

True. I think it's all about how important saving money is to you. Everyone has a price-effort curve that depends on their financial situation and how frugal they are.

Cool, glad you like it. We're definitely adding search and tagging in the near future. We want tagging to be a first order tool for navigation just as descending the hierarchy is now.
