This. Why would anyone invest in Apple in 1998 instead of Microsoft?

I was with the author, until I saw the HN redesign. Looked beautiful, but not functional. Made me realize why HN / reddit / quora / etc use the format they do: it works.

I'm really glad to see this on the front page of HN. My company is building API-based security tools to help medical device vendors prevent these kinds of vulns. There is huge risk in this class of IoT device, but not a ton of engineer

A rational investor is concerned with risk-adjust returns after taxes. The fact that capital gains rates are lower than income rates allows an investor to accept a higher level of risk than if the two tax rates were lower.

Dr. Hartl, I'm so thankful for all of your ruby / rails tutorials. They were literally transformational for me earlier in my career. Glad to see you continuing to put out good content. The supportive community around Rails made it

I was blown away by this! At $5 a jar, that’s 10,500 units a year. Or roughly 350 a day. They must have a distribution deal with Whole Foods.

Great point. I should have focused on false negatives in my original comment to make my point. Thank you!

True! But a similar debate has played out in the mammography space. While routine mammograms have undoubtedly saved thousands of lives, some researchers have concluded that the complications caused by false positives (e.g. infections after

This is good to know! I'm still genuinely curious how many false positives this leads to.

I stopped using Facebook in December of 2015, but I desperately want to know if they count my “sign in with Facebook” SSO uses toward their DAU count. It would be really misleading if they do.

Side thought- what an interesting change from the software world 10 years ago. Who would have thought windows support was a lower priority then OS X and Linux. Onward and upward!

I tend to agree. The more experience I gain in running startup companies the more I believe the recipe for success is 1) show up 2) work hard 3) get lucky. And #3 is super important.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but yes, there are patients that pay (or are charged) a 1,000% markup, that in turn offsets patients not paying anything. I'm not saying the problem is the patients paying nothing;

My company sells dev tools to software companies. Whenever I have talked to a startup about their tech stack and they reveal they’re on .NET, I later find out that none of the founders are technical, and they’ve outsourced development to Ea
