This series of photos from a Key West fishing tour company really drives it home: https://www.npr.org/sections/krulwich/2014/02/05/257046530/b...

Obvious counterexample: one-time pads. Even if you don’t go that extreme, there’s no indication that e.g. AES is breakable.

I wouldn’t say “ran on.” It wasn’t a fly by wire system or anything like that. But plenty of electronic systems would have used vacuum tubes, such as radios and radar.

Am I not allowed to have my opinion about his opinion? You can have expansive ideas about opinions being acceptable but you need to apply them consistently. If he can tell a bunch of people that they’re not worthy of their careers, surely I

The only significance of $10,000 is that it’s the amount that triggers reporting. Such transactions aren’t illegal or even suspicious. They’ll write you a check for the full amount and the other bank will accept it. There might be a hold on

Edge cases which rarely come into play are the ones you should be most afraid of. Things that happen often get caught before they cause trouble. Things that never happen are fine. Things that happen rarely are what get you. For an made-up e

It’s not a nice way to talk to someone but the original comment was also extremely rude. They basically told a significant chunk of the people reading this side that they aren’t worthy of the career they’ve chosen. That’s deeply insulting a

If you think excitement indicates skill to the extent that you want to base your hiring on it, that’s fine, but don’t expect skilled programmers to be all that interested in working for you.

I just can’t find anything nearly as interesting to do in my own time as what I do at work. Sure, I could build stuff for myself, but it’s kind of boring!

The real purpose of the justice system is to make people believe in it so they avoid settling their own disputes. Anything else is incidental. Actually punishing criminals and not punishing innocent people helps, but is by no means necessar

911 doesn’t have the resources or training to deal with suicidal people. The purpose of 911 is to get first responders to your physical location. The purpose of suicide hotlines is to get help on the phone.

Even more pedantically, lying is all about intent to deceive. A correct statement is still a lie if you think it’s wrong. The key question here is: does Amazon intend to deceive? It’s probably impossible to know but the odds are decently go

Did they update their web site? Because as it stands now, it’s clear that they‘re a standard agency connecting developers to people who want work done, with some vague stuff about AI helping to match them.

A lot of that is because most end users don’t have such granular prices. They keep their AC on because why not. When price changes are concentrated on just a few users, the swings get wild.

Latency on a loaded connection can be really bad but it won’t be related to how fast you type unless the connection is really slow (like, early dial up modem slow). When you press a key, it will take a while to see the result. Depending o
