Static typing is great until people ignore it. They pass around Map<String, String>, use magic strings for the keys, and stuff in Integers, Enum::toString, and UUIDs as values. And also building XML blobs by hand instead of serializin

Maybe use a /8 subnet with reasonable DHCP lease durations to avoid that possibility. I know not all home gear can do it (old WRT54G with stock firmware can’t; thinking more along the lines of pfSense or Ubiquiti routers).

I’m on my first gig involving front-end now, with ExtJS 3.4. A few years before I joined (was able to observe the team from a periphery) they tried using Sencha’s 3.x-to-4.0 migration tool, which left the app in a state still needing attent

This is broken with floating headers and footers. The scrolling goes over the whole viewport; after each pg dn-equivalent, you need to scroll back up two or three lines to see what was covered by the header/footer.

Are you using POI’s eventmodel APIs to handle such files? The SAX model isn’t too bad for reading files.

It was reversible enough to write the Apache POI library. I maintain code that uses the HSSF streaming API portion of the library, which mainly gives you low-level access to the structures in XLS files. The OO.org folks made some very nice

I’ve been casually trying to knock into the black box of MySQL’s internals with no success yet. I have queries that do GROUP BYs across multiple unindexed columns in frequently large tables, so it ends up with temp tables on disk and file

If you just have internet service from Verizon, and your router is already hooked up to the ONT by Ethernet, you can pretty much just pull the cable from that and hook it up to any Ubiquiti unit. I have a USG 3 and it works swimmingly. For

This shouldn’t be done even in the office. Can’t tell you how many times I get interrupted by any member of my team in the office for trivialities or even useful things that can also wait. We have some fires but that’s only about 10% of my

MySQL has a barebones CSV storage engine: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/se-csv-limitations.h... More usefully, MySQL has LOAD DATA INFILE facilities for bulk loading of flat files.

I remember first being able to use USB mass storage devices (like a Lexar Jumpdrive with capacity measured in tens of MBs) with ME on the family computer. Then I learned that 98 SE had such support...but my HP Pavilion 8530 (with an AMD K6

We specifically had to switch to MyISAM for some things when upgrading from 5.5 to 5.7, in 2017. We were hitting InnoDB’s 4k row limit in many cases (without clobs). Fortunately the tables in question are filled once, updated a couples time

I'm doing QA on a replacement for a VB6 / Access application for a large and slow-moving utility company. Funny thing is that the consultants building the app on the hot, super-awesome BPM platform move at the same pace, and each
