Why would anybody want to work as a default? Work is a trade of your time for some financial security. It's a sacrifice that doesn't need to be glorified. I do understand that a functioning society needs to good work ethic where t

Honestly, why isn't there a general indignation against the concept of tax breaks for any charitable contribution? I'm generally not aligned with the libertarians, but let's just lower taxes and simply let people give whereve

I think what you're missing is an explanation on why there should be any correlation between being a good developer/employee with writing a blog. Sure, you can say communication skills, but you want to test for that anyway. I actu

Maybe dumb question: If JPEG XL beats avif, and both are royalty free, shouldn't the AV group create a new video format based on av1 that for I-frames uses JPEG XL? I mean, it feels like the same static image codec should be used in wh

We both know that, but then came the users that opened CoolPic.jpeg.exe and installed wallpaper packages from .ru domains. I honestly can't see a much better compromise than JS to include the common users.

It's the generic HN snark that pushes for no JS websites for everything, without considering the benefits of users having such a powerful VM that probably protected them from running random executables.

Overall, if I myself were to give a single counterargument, I'd actually agree with you. My initial message through was that multiple counterarguments by multiple people need to be made in order to really balance out the perceived cool

Like some dude said, that's just, like, my opinion. I'm not forcing it on anyone, but I do want a fair chance of trying to convince others of it. I understand that mastery and control can come from dangerous activities, but I can

That post does make it sounds very cool to do all these things though, so I'd say it's good to have a balancing post that says that risking body parts for a thrill is uncool.

If the underlying data hasn't changed, the page isn't written to disk. CPUs do keep track of writes that mark a memory page as "dirty".

Thank you for the link. His output seems to be remarkably perenial and valid today, the kind that's usually done by a profound observer that has all the information but that can also see things through the eyes of an outsider.

Over time I've changed my mind regarding the GIL. Now I think it's existence actually is a good thing, since it makes a lot of things easy and robust by default. The subinterpreters route sounds really promising since it strikes a

One thing that I've noticed in recent years is just how good the general population has gotten at bullshiting. Where before you didn't have too many teachers in this dark art of spinning any argument, the internet has given everyo

As a Romanian, I completely agree. The US does need a bit more civic spirit that can't be generated from market incentives -- it needs to be indoctrinated so to speak from a young age.

This is the first time I'm seeing this. I'm surprised they have a .net domain and that the design is so terrible. They just extracted Instagram comments and threw them in a sea of whitespace. No thought is given to anchoring conte

Tech being forced to interact with government to generally improve society seems to be such a foreign concept with the tech world that now I'm not sure how the anti-gov propaganda can be unwound.

Very few of the people praising Corbusier actually choose to live between his concrete slabs when given the opportunity. After such a large part of the population is complaining about the state of modern architecture, I have no idea why the

I'm not arguing with you, I mostly believe the same. There are many cities though where public transport is such a foreign concept, that partial solutions will have to be a stepping stone for something better later.

I'm dreading a bit a future where the skies are swarming with flying taxis. Every urban view is guaranteed to be ruined long-term if this "takes off". Still, maybe it would be ok to have this trade-off to solve traffic.

Exactly, if you're now forced to put everything in one place you're forced to acknowledge and understand the complexity of your state, and might have incentives to simplify it.
