Saying something is art is really not an excuse to not put in extra effort. Proof of engineering makes a statement in itself.

You mean 2022, right? Yes, it did appear, but not as an original work. To me the adaptation felt worsened by modern ideology. John Constantine was change to Johanna Constantine, a worse written character, while at the same time the comic ac

Yes, but isn't this obvious when you internalize the concept of "diminishing returns"? The domain might matter, as developers with some experience will understand for instance that the optimal amount of bugs is non-zero, but

For me and you it's not surprising, for others it seems it is. Maybe people have gotten worse at intuitively understanding that tradeoffs need to be made in anything, and that the questions that define systems are never choices as much

> You are bored of many artists being in a similar region on the political spectrum? Yes, there should be a bit more diversity in the type of stories/heroes/villains we're being presented with. The fact that US culture has

Jetpens is fantastic. I've found the best combo for me: a metal Parker Jotter pen with an Ohto refil, but it's nice seeing some new options from time to time. [1] https://www.jetpens.com/Parker-Jotter-Ballpoint-Pen

I was expecting the story of the letter J, that Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail has taught me had appeared only in the 15th century as a letter separate than "I".

I think you're interpreting it wrong. Edge-cases matter a lot for quality of life, as some other comments illustrated well. The solutions to these edge-cases don't need to be solved by the same thing that solves your average case

That's very cynical. What's the point of "fuck you" money if you still have to be a talking money and sell your reputation?

I have seen that shaming sometimes works, so I wouldn't abandon it. After all, there are so few social deterents we can use that I only say "that won't work" when I have a better suggestion.

If you have a copyrighted photo that I simply put through jpeg compression, am I legally allowed to use that? Software programs are not humans, and need to be treated differently. Anthropomorphization is one of the slipperiest paths to argu

For me, the closest modern successors to the Borland suite are Visual Studio (not VSCode) and the Jetbrains IDEs. The feel like they're the only one with a holistic, batteries included, design that actually focuses on debuggability. I

For absolutely any nation, it's insanely hard to make 5000 citizens of another country do whatever you want them to without leaking anything. Besides China, I can't think of any other nation that could get those numbers.

Starting from Python 3.13 there should be a new method os.process_cpu_count() that aims to get the actually available number of cores our process can run on.

I actually have a different version to this: 9X% of everything is crap, where X ranges from 0 to 9.999. That variation though is what differentiates a category and a time, since either 1 in 10, in 100 or 1 in 1000 can be a great find. This

One change I'd make to this structure would be to pack all the children of a node together. That way you could find out the list of all children of a node with a binary search, and they'd have some cache-friendly properties. Inser

I remember doing bluray re-encodes back in that day. x264 was simply better as an encoder when compared to vp8 and you knew that at least in terms of software everyone had a compatible decoder in their preferred codec-pack.

I first user Git about 10 years ago, going from Accurev and Perforce. Those VCSs were a bit heavy to configure, but their UI allowed a lot of complex and easy workflows to happen at the same time. Git won by being free and since a lot of pe

Validating property rights is a fixed-time operation that seems to be one of the basic services a state should offer. I read the parent poster naturally asking why 2% instead of some lower, fixed amount.
