Is this just another example of Skeuomorphism? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeuomorph I can see where this would drive adoption. From the user standpoint, familiarity is a selling point. The more the electric car ca

This is something I've noticed as well. As both a client and as an IT troubleshooter, I try to be keenly aware of this distinction. When I'm at the doctor's office, I relay what I've observed, and try to refrain from any

I don't know the reason for that, but like the cursor to mark the progress bar method above, I do this trick to this day. You don't have to highlight first, you can just highlight as you go, wiggle the mouse outside of the bounds

Having used Linux in various roles for nearly 20 years, I have to agree. Supporting Windows is hard enough when you have to tell the customer over the phone to click on the circle or flag thingy in the bottom left corner, because they haven

Microsoft's own tech support forums are filled with this non-advice. Either system restore is brought up, or SFC /scannow which rarely fixes anything. Often it really is more time efficient just to do a system reset or start compl

Thanks for this. When the Multics source was released a few years ago, I really wanted to play around with that environment. It's nice to know there's something a mere mortal can install and use.

I think the settings app is just a poor imitation of the Mac preferences panel. Preferences panel gives the appearance of the major settings, all in one place. You can only have one module, like network, or printers, selected at one time. S

I remember trying it in the mid 90s and then not using it much. I remember it being quite slow. The lack of even rudimentary multi-tasking caused it to hang easily. I could see where it might be useful in a lab with 8086 and 286 machines. B

If nothing else, to the non-expert like myself, at least this claim seems plausible. I've seen a wide range of other claims that seem way off-base. It seems unlikely to be of Meso-American origin, for instance. I kind of hope it remain

It's a ironic to me that the original inspiration for the story was not ceramics, but photography. My main pastime is photography, and I took this advice to heart and started being as prolific as possible, which is something that digit

Say I'm convinced that IDs could possibly leak information, but UUIDs are problematic (e.g. cost of enforcing uniqueness grows with each added row). Would encrypting the ID with some symmetric key plus a salt be sufficient? The client

One small note on your mention of MacOS, and I don't know if this has been fixed. A couple of years ago, the certificates expired on some versions of the OS installer, like El Capitan and could no longer be verified. While there's

I feel like this is on purpose. How could it be a mistake, Apple has legendary design sense? I think it's to discourage people from using the mouse while its charging, and thus undermining what distinguishes the product. Regardless of

I wonder if it's time to re-evaluate the concept of "not invented here". Services that exist at another company's pleasure aren't a platform to build a business on. This is effectively a type a single sourcing. Ther

I found even a Vaxstation 3100 with the m42 cpu and 12MB of RAM was enough to work with. Sometime within the last five years, I installed NetBSD by netbooting from a Linux mopd server (because I didn't have a working 512-byte block SCS
