I find your statement puzzling. A GNU extension is by definition not “strictly valid C”, compound literals are valid C because they are defined in C99.

A value of 0 is not the same thing as a missing value.

Why does the syntax matter at all? What would be the difference if Swift had exactly the same features and semantics but a different syntax?

Here is a great article about strings in Swift: http://oleb.net/blog/2014/07/swift-strings/ Short story: “number of characters” and “nth character” are more complicated questions than you might think whe

The technique is called rephotograpy, search for that and you'll find many more.

There is one thing I don’t understand: the balloon can have a powerful enough antenna to send information to a phone 60,000 or more feet away, how does the phone talk back to the balloon?

Ok, let me replace my “can’t” with “is a lot less likely to”. I checked: neither // nor /// can be used as operators (syntax error: they both just start a comment). All your other examples work, but I would say thos

I think the danger of abuse is stronger when you overload existing operators than when you make up new ones. The latter can't fool you on its semantic and behavior.

It's a small thing but I think let/var deserved a mention too (my C code is littered with const everywhere).

Eh, you got me. Digital camera disaply resolution is reported like that, worse, they don’t count pixels but “dots” (i.e. subpixels). Example: the Olympus E-M10 has a 1,037,000 dots display, which means 345,600 pixels, which means 720x480. B

They do that for digital camera displays and it’s super confusing.

That is true for every programming language and platform pair. The syntax is always the easy part, but unfortunately the only thing most people fixate on.

Sorry, deleted my comment while you were posting this. Repeating verbatim here: “Chrome OS APIs, like Firefox OS APIs are not web APIs, so a Chrome OS app is not a web app, it’s just a regular app developed using web technologies.”

Your comment is overly harsh but I find the reaction interesting. It’s getting more common here. In other cases I’m also disturbed by the broken scrolling but in this case my only complaint is the space bar not working. This is a slideshow,

I think ccTLDs and the common TLDs work now more as signaling "this is a website" than as namespaces. When I read bounce.com I know it's a website, bounce.ninja not so much. We'll have to go back to 1999 when people didn
