Sometimes you can get to the correct city in the US. Rarely can you get any further than that from an IP. In other countries you can only really be sure about the country.

DB table "pending_emails" with a time field... cronjob removes them based on time entered, and sends them. shrug

Why wouldn't you want to use a DB queue or something, and have a separate cronjob / process the outgoing email?

Sure, it happens in other areas too. But the last place you want it happening is on a hosting platform. The consequences of your hosting being down are larger than not getting an alarm on your iphone or being able to connect to PSN.

I've been programming for 25 years or so. Hmm dates... It's almost as if you'd want to just count the number of seconds/ms since some point in time. Then you can do arithmetic easily, don't have to worry about calendars, leap years, etc...

It makes them as relevant as McDonalds is, when I'm considering where to go to get some good food.

I'd guess McDonalds has a similar market share in food as Microsoft has in software... Do you disagree? I bought a Kinect. I used it for a couple of days. It had a novelty value, but no staying power. I don't think I'm alone there. In any e

McDonalds are the biggest and most successful restaurant in the world. But I doubt any chef would describe their food as being fantastic. When I want to eat a really nice meal with friends or family, I rule out McDonalds. Does this make me

I'm guessing average HNer's see "girl", and think to themselves "must stamp out any sexism by upvoting anything remotely related to females". Reverse sexism at it's misguided best...

The fact HN upvoted this straight to the number one slot based on age and gender rather than content is a little bit depressing IMHO. Either the average HNer is less discerning than I imagined, or the system is being gamed.

90% of this job is "thinking". You can do that while you're playing with your kids. You can be looking after kids, whilst designing in your mind what you need to do next, planning out what code needs writing and how to solve problems. Sure,

"I get to spend 50% more time with my kids then almost all other dads (three days versus two). Fifty percent. It’s insane." Why not 'work' at home? I've worked at home for the last 5 or 6 years, and get to spend pretty much all my time with

try websockets, if fails, use comet. It's not rocket science. (Mibbit has been using websocket in production for 2.5 years or so)
