The idea with a "count" in a British election is that so many people from all the different parties are wandering around (both counting by hand and observing) that it's difficult to get up to any funny business. There is obvi

Shaders are for different hardware than regular code, both in the amount of independent work happening all the time but also the memory hierarchy is designed for very different workloads. I think it's the memory than explains why one h

SIMT let's a scheduler get clever about memory accesses, SIMD can practically only access memory linearly (scatter gather can do better but it's still usually quite linear) whereas SIMT can be much smarter in terms of having lots

Why would someone working as an algorithmic market maker on the sell-side not be a "real" quant? I work on the buy-side for the record.

Most quants work on the sell-side where direct forecasting is almost irrelevant (to an academic, a trader perhaps not...), in that they are usually attempting to "interpolate" market prices to be able to price derivatives.

Opposition to GC is mostly people being fooled by GC-ed languages tending to be higher level and thus generating more garbage. > Embedded systems In the embedded work I've done I barely allocate at all, so it matters not GC or other

Formatters can also readily spot and preserve patterns if you want them. You can shape the cost function to value patterns. I suspect Walter formed this opinion when they were much worse. Also formatters have enormous benefit when you have

The tail is not as painful as real engineering but as an industry we throw away billions in value every year to dumb processes. There is more to this than just the scar tissue. It's not just a feature, the model is fundamentally differ

Good excel (such a thing does exist) should almost never refer to a cell by its coordinate rather than using either a named range or better still a table, this probably encourages not doing that.

I don't really know them well enough yet but some of these frameworks do seem to be in need of some compiler engineers e.g. with this compile time reactivity for example I was surprised there was no mention of dataflow analysis.

It interesting seeing Mr Beast talk about AB testing thumbnails — his old style was apparently not actually what the algorithm wanted but he'd never tested it properly.
