Bit of a nitpick before I've even read the article: Qantas is an acronym and doesn't actually have a U after the Q.

Yeah, I've never gotten why people consider pointers to be hard. If you consider memory to be a massive array, pointers are just the indices that you use to get at different elements in that array.

There's no need to make it not be valid. C++ uses begin() and end() for obtaining iterators to containers, but nothing's stopping you from using those method names for your own purposes. It's just that if you want to use a fe

I never realised how good we had it comparatively in Australia. I always just thought that Eftpos was something that "just worked" and that everyone around the world had (or at least an equivalent). No fees, no credit, no monthly

The comment about 10% of CS graduates in Australia being female rings true and I think it's a highball. I'm typing this as I sit in a systems programming lecture at UQ and the attendance is hardly 5% female. Of course that's

I haven't paid a cent for my iPhones and I got all of them at launch. All were free on contract, and the 4 was actually free - as in I could have gotten the same contract without the phone and paid the same amount per month.

ObjC++ uses C++11 (plus you NEED ObjC/ObjC++ to make calls to Cocoa).

I run a maxed out last-gen iMac. 3.4GHz i7, 16GB RAM, 2GB VRAM. I still run into occasions where things slow down, mostly when I'm running a zillion things at once. It's not one app that needs 12 cores, it's the overall multitasking experie

When I had issues doing an install of Lion (I wanted Lion on an external HD before I upgraded to ML), I just drove out to an Apple Store and booted off one of their network images. What Apple should really do is ship an app with OSX that le

Wow, there's actually an upfront cost in the US? I never paid a cent for mine - it was 100% subsidised (and you could have gotten the same plan for the same cost but without the phone, so this really was 100%).

I just keep everything I care about in my Dropbox. I use enough machines on a day-to-day basis that this leaves me with a decent local redundancy, and having it all on Dropbox means that I'll have access to it even if all of my machines go

Ever heard of the Core Profile? If you request an OpenGL context from your OS and ask for a core profile context, you'll get a context that's almost identical to ES2. It's shader based and all of the legacy fixed stuff is entirely gone.

I absolutely despise Gmail and am so happy to have left for iCloud email. My personal life shouldn't be shouldered by advertisements for the highest bidder. It's the same reason I hardly touch Facebook anymore - I don't give a damn about wh

Snow Leopard's not that great. Lion (and now Mountain Lion) runs faster on my mid-2010 baseline MBP than SL ever did. Snow Leopard's UI was way too colourful and the Aqua scrollbars were far too big and look really dated. It wasted pixels o

EVERYONE (not just budget airlines) wants you there 30 minutes before take-off - more if there's checked luggage involved. It takes 20 minutes to board, so it's fairly reasonable to have 10 minutes for getting through security and walking t

It depends on what you're editing. If I'm ever writing any C/C++/Objective-C I ALWAYS use XCode even if it's only as a text editor and not a project manager/compiler, due to its fantastic syntax highlighting. TextWrangler's great as a repla

Let's say you have image assets in two sizes - 1x and 2x. If you want to show an image at 1.5x, you don't upscale from 1x, you downscale from 2x so that you have a crisper image. If you're looking for a practical application of this, watch
