Two sites with two different intentions. Hacker News is for reading interesting things and learning, StackOverflow is for getting answers to problems. I don't think SO would benefit from leaving popular non-constructive questions unlocked.

Not related to to carrier lock-in, but Kindle Fires are sold at a subsidised price, with the money made up by advertising in the OS. This advertising can be disabled for a fee. If customers were allowed to alter their device in any way they

The "Temporarily allow top-level sites by default" option gets you most of those benefits, while allowing most websites to run just fine without having to explicitly whitelist anything.

Assumptions have nothing to do with it. As John Carmack has stated[1], games have been released to Linux, and they have mostly failed to make money. The only major exception that comes to mind are the Humble Bundles, whose unique business m

I use imdb's android app for this. It has a "coming soon" page where you can see upcoming releases, and if you tap the release date, it's added to your calendar.

They aren't stupid people, but they may be stupid as an entity. Perhaps whoever makes these decisions is under pressure from management to look busy, so they pursue these largely useless measures because they're easy work.
