Then you aren't gaining anything over simply calling 'new' on that class, negating the point of the factory pattern, right?

Jeez, I don't even know what MediaCoder has done wrong here. If they're not linking against ffmpeg, just piping to it, MediaCoder's code doesn't need to be GPL'd, right? Anyone care to explain? These ffmpeg guys sure aren't.

Your program is much larger due to 64-bit pointers. The big speed drops will occur with cache misses. Your L1 and L2 cache are only so big, and every cache miss will set you speed back about an order of magnitude.

"one fifth of all visitors are using IE6". Erm, no. 71% of visitors are using IE, and of that 71%, 22% are using IE6. 71% * 22% = 15%, or just over one seventh.

How has the Office Suite gone downhill in the last few years? Office 2007 was a major innovation from my point of view. The company threw out an established, yet underperforming UI, taking a huge risk. But it's payed off in greater usabilit

Not to miss the point of your message, but screensavers can be programmed in any language. I made one in .NET. The only constraint is the program needs to accept some command line parameters. But I agree, it should be an abstract class/in
